There is much I want to say about the journey of this play, and the moment it has found itself premiering in. I am cognizant of how weird it is to know a story is “timely” and not really be able to talk about why in an attempt to avoid spoilers. My pride in the work this extraordinary team of artists has done, my deep pride in this production - that pride has been filtered through a heavy, furious heart the past few weeks, as I’ve watched a play I wrote in the fall of 2018 as “soft sci-fi” quickly start to be outpaced by reality.

At its core, beyond all the AI jargon and blatant Palantir comps, I’ve always viewed this as a play about dehumanization. How we dehumanize each other, and how we dehumanize ourselves. It’s about how that happens at a policy level, a labor level, and an interpersonal level. But it’s also a play about how we break free from that cycle of dehumanization, how we eradicate numbness, how we hold onto the unquantifiable.

We’ve attempted to craft a work of theater that’ll make you feel more human - that’ll make you laugh and gasp and get angry and think. If you’ve seen it, let’s talk! If you haven’t seen it yet, avoid the NY Times review (beware: spoilers), visit us at the Lortel, THEN let’s talk! I’m so excited for this play to be out in the world.
