Publishers believe we SHOULD judge a book by its cover, and that image gets far more attention than any other illustration in the book. I spent a couple months refining the cover for Project WOOFF before we landed on the final design. #bookstagram #readersofinstagram @bloomsburybooksus by @matthew.mcelligott

Dear Mr. McElligott,
I like your stories especially Uncle Frank’s Pit. Sorry I wasn’t at your presentation. I know it was good anyways. Sincerely, Kyrek.

My advance copy of Project WOOFF arrived in the mail today. The book is now officially done, and cannot be changed. Consequently, I will never be reading it again, for fear of finding a mistake I missed. #bookstagram #readersofinstagram @bloomsburybooksus by @matthew.mcelligott

A favorite reader letter from the archives. This one starts strong, then fades, then picks up a little at the end.

Welcome to CCBF for the first time, award-winning author and illustrator, @matthew.mcelligott ! 🎉

Matthew McElligott has been drawing and making up stories for as long as he can remember, and turning those stories into children’s books for more than 30 years! He lives in upstate New York with his wife and a bunch of pets where he creates in his home studio!.When he is not working on illustration or children’s books, he teaches at Russell Sage College in Albany, NY.

Matthew’s featured title, Project Wooff, is a funny, mysterious, action-packed middle grade adventure, featuring black-and-white chapter opening artwork and full-page black-and-white illustrations that is perfect for readers who love secret experiments and talking animals! Alex Grebert has grown up in the off-grid community of Underland, where electricity and internet are practically nonexistent, and that is a major issue for a kid who loves coding! When Alex’s best friend Lily Day takes in a stray cat named Fuzzypants, Alex is pulled into an adventure straight out of one of his self-made video games. The cat, whose real name is Professor Fuzzypants, PhD., is a product of Project WOOFF (Weaponized Optimization of Flora/Fauna), a top-secret government project that developed intelligent, speaking animals. Project WOOFF was supposed to have been shut down a long time ago, but someone is continuing the experiments. Alex and Lily are determined to find out why it all went wrong, especially when Alex discovers that there may be more to his parents’ story than he had ever been told.

Matthew will also be signing:
🧪Books from his Mad Scientist Academy series
👽Even Aliens Need Snacks
🧌Even Monsters Need Haircuts
🦁🐜The Lion’s Share

I’m constantly amazed by the incredible work that copyeditors do. They check facts, improve clarity, and help tweak the text to ensure it’s consistent and true to the author’s vision. A thankless, invisible job that makes the story so much better. As proof, I present my favorite copyedit ever... by @matthew.mcelligott
