This Friday July 24 we’re excited to welcome @sebastianserpajj to Leslieville Jiu Jitsu for a special class from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.💥EMAIL TO REGISTER leslievillejiujitsu@gmail.com(members and non members)Sebastian is an innovative spider and lasso guard specialist from @outerheavenjjclub , the same academy as our friend @kmahechabjj , who joined us just a few Fridays ago. If you’re looking to sharpen your open guard, and modern gi game, this is a class you won’t want to miss. The class is open to the entire @jiujitsuforlifeteam for FREE! Visitors are welcome and can join us with our regular drop in fee of just $20. A big thank you to Coach MP @matthew_pasquale for making this happen. These last two Friday guest workshops have been personally covered by MP because he believes in investing in our team and bringing high level instruction directly to our members. We appreciate everything he does behind the scenes. From the @nextgenjiujitsu camp he ran for us, to these workshops, he is always looking to bring new experiences to our club. He also uses these as semi privates for himself, be near MP in the class if you want that extra attention and instruction. 😉 (inside joke)Come out, welcome Sebastian to Leslieville, and let’s keep raising the level of our room together. Thank you @jessehebscher aka the Miami Don for these new connections. 🪽 by @matthew_pasquale

📸 & edit by @laizarocha_ This weekend we had the privilege of competing at the 10th Anniversary @nextgenjiujitsu Tournament held at the historic Mattamy Athletic Centre, formerly Maple Leaf Gardens.A huge thank you to Professor @jorgebrittobjj for bringing our community together and hosting another incredible event. Ten years of Next Gen is an amazing milestone, and it reflects the dedication you’ve shown to growing Jiu Jitsu in Ontario. Thank you @kelvinbezerra @nadissonca & @van_gcg To every Leslieville Jiu Jitsu competitor, we’re so proud of you. Stepping onto the competition mats and challenging yourself in front of such a large audience takes immense courage. Give yourself a pat on the back and stand up straight. You did it. Thank you to everyone who came out to coach, cheer, volunteer, and support us throughout the day. Our team continues to grow because of this incredible community.Thank you to the parents of our kids team for the trust. A special thank you to Coach @matthew_pasquale for leading our competition camp and helping prepare the team over the past several weeks. If we lose it’s not because we aren’t in shape. Coach MP made sure of that. If watching this weekend has you thinking about competing, the next opportunity is the @ibjjf Toronto Open this September. Registration is now open, and we’d love to see even more of our team test their Jiu Jitsu in the tournament setting. by @matthew_pasquale

Today marks 20 years of training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.When I first entered the academy, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. It was just a week before my 18th birthday, and they still let me train even though my parents couldn’t sign the waiver at the time. I’m not 100% sure, but I may have lied to them.I was a very shy kid with almost zero athletic ability, but I had watched the UFC and thought martial arts were cool. I wanted to do striking, but the day I showed up was grappling. I wore shorts and a T-shirt with a hat so low it basically hid my face. I barely spoke or made eye contact with anyone.A bunch of the guys started competing at white belt, and after a couple months of training, I signed up for my first tournament: Grapplers Quest New Jersey on October 14, 2006. I was nervous for about a month leading up to it and, let’s just say, it wasn’t my best performance.Jorge took over as head instructor when I was a blue belt and completely changed the training environment. We started winning, and the confidence of the team grew. That kicked off what we called the “golden boys” era.Throughout my early and mid-20s, I made some of the closest friends of my life through training, travelling, and competing. The sessions were brutal, but Jorge had us convinced that if someone was going to beat us, they’d have to kill us to do it. We felt invincible. We would do road trips cramming four or five guys into one hotel room, compete all day Saturday, then drive home through the night to save money. If you were ever stuck in a car with me back then, I apologize for telling the same five stories over and over again. After a year competing at brown belt, I opened APEX Training Centre. Even though I was still on the mats, my goals had shifted. I was there to support my friends as a training partners, but I wasn’t competing beside them in the same way anymore.I blinked, and nine years went by. I’d already been a black belt for many years.More in comments… by @matthew_pasquale
