Hurricane Isaias is stronger than expected as it approaches the Gulf Coast, with landfall expected near Pensacola.

Damaging winds, life-threatening storm surge, flooding rain, and tornadoes are all major concerns.

Wind gusts could reach 100–110 mph in some areas, with storm surge reaching 6–9 feet along parts of the Florida Panhandle.

MyRadar meteorologist @matthewcappucci breaks down the latest forecast, including where the greatest threats are expected.

A tropical storm could hit the Mojave Desert next week!

Tropical Storm Rachel could impact southern California and the Desert Southwest.

The National Hurricane Center has extended Rachel’s cone of concern into southern California and the Four Corners region. San Diego and Las Vegas may be fringed by shower, but a strip of moderate to heavy rain, and some flood potential, could fall along the California/Arizona border and into southwest Utah.

This could lead to 2 to 3+ inch rainfall totals in Yuma, Kingman, Parker and Lake Havasu City, as well as St. George and Cedar City, Utah. Impacts will be greatest Sunday into Monday.

Scattered flash flooding is expected in parts of the Mojave Desert, where the equivalent of a month’s worth of rain could fall in a matter of hours. A few leftover squalls may briefly produce tropical storm-force winds of 39 mph or greater.

There could even be an isolated tornado risk in southwest Arizona between Yuma and Phoenix on Monday, especially along Interstates 8 and 10. Rachel’s leftover spin will encourage a couple thunderstorm to rotate.

Rachel will be scooped northeast by an approaching upper-level low to the west. That upper-air disturbance is kinking the jet stream into a dip known as a trough. The jet stream will “capture” Rachel and yank it northeast. By Sunday, it will be accelerating toward the Baja Peninsula and entering the Desert Southwest. Its quick forward speed may allow it to retain tropical characteristics into the Untied States before having time to weaken.

This is a rather unusual event that bears some resemblance to Hilary, which drenched Death Valley in 2023. We expect this system to slip farther east.

In the unlikely event that the approaching upper-air disturbance trends slower, Rachel may manage to track a bit farther west, bringing rain and perhaps gusty winds to Los Angeles. by @matthewcappucci

A hurricane is likely forming in the Gulf. “Vorticity”, or spin, is gathering, and there’s an 80% chance a tropical storm or hurricane forms. “Isaias” is the next name. #GulfHurricane #Isaias #NewOrleans #Gulfport #Tallahassee by @matthewcappucci
