Lanterns that rule...

We’re calling them the king and queen of lanterns because Camilla likened them to chess pieces, but they do actually have a claim to the throne.

First there is the ancestry, and a clear lineage to Matthew’s favourite finial.

Second, they’re made just like the antiques; in nearby workshops specialising in mouth-blown glass…

heavy-gauge, hand-spun brass…

And laser cutting (ok, that’s new).

They also come in three sizes - small…

medium…

and large.

And in many, many guises…

Domus IV.

The domus globe lantern – the king to the corolla’s queen.

From a neat 200mm to a mighty 400mm globe, via a beautifully balanced 300mm, there are options for halls, porches, landings, tables and kitchen islands. Or wherever you like, frankly!

Diagrams on the website show the possible permutations.

This configuration features a single verdigris brass cap and twin finials framing a clear mouth-blown globe with a simple two-way fitting.

If you’d like a little guidance, send us a photo of your space. Always happy to help 🤓 by @matthewcoxetc

Corolla l

The largest and most adorned of our corolla lanterns, which come in three sizes and different guises.

We also have a domus lantern - the king to the corolla’s queen, which comes in the same number of sizes and guises - we’ll introduce him later this evening.

Is the future of British luxury in their hands?

The things we make don’t make themselves. Behind everything we make is a group of extraordinarily skilled people, often unsung, dedicated and generous in passing on skills learned over years and generations.

They also happen to be best salespeople on the planet. Nobody communicates the value of a well-made object quite like the person who knows exactly what went into making it.

But skills only survive if there is a reason to keep using them.

The future of British luxury needs people making things here, and people who understand the value of buying them.

So is the future of British luxury really in their hands?

No, I think it's in yours.

We have hope that things can change and it’s something our managing director, Camilla @meelypops is looking forward to discussing with a very well-informed panel hosted by Theresa Austin of @walpole_uk at @decorex_international on Monday as part of Designed to endure: sustainability, desirability and the future of British luxury.

Panellists include: @alexandrallewellynlondon @edwardbulmerpaint Lewis Taylor design director at @davidcollinsstudio @antjebalow at @thepeninsulalondonhotel

Wonder

This morning I listened to children’s author @katherine.rundell talk about ‘wonder’, and she brought me to tears. It was the most moving thing I’ve heard, and that was her aim and her message - if we want to preserve the wonder in our world, our love for it can no longer be passive - it needs to be active.

This means resisting the prescribed and convenient, and devoting more of our time, focus and attention to understanding things more deeply, because you cannot protect something you don’t love, and you cannot love something you don’t know.

So this is us actively sharing some of the things in which we find wonder, and hope you will too ❤️

From memory and imagination.

Tomorrow we'll show you two new lanterns composed of my favourite elements from antique examples I've found. The two aren't so different – Camilla likens them to the king and queen on a chess board. This one's the queen.

We'll also show you how they were made and how they shapeshift to work in different spaces.

Time to geek out about brackets.

From whimsy to defiance, there are five distinct bracket profiles to choose from when it comes to designing your ideal orderly shelves – each a motif borrowed from a major design era. Each profile comes in small or large.

Swipe to see:

primitive 'hollow', whose clean lines feel contemporary
romantic 'cusp', a spiritual wave to towering Gothic
Classical 'corbel', embodying the power of the Renaissance;
angular 'quirk', encapsulating the confidence of Art Deco
Post-Modern 'beak', symbolic of late-20th-century subversion

Meet the orderly shelves…

Designed for the naturally orderly or the deliberately disorderly, our shelf design began with the primitive, vernacular kitchen rack. The kind used for centuries to store candles, spices and spoons.

We deconstructed the components and blew up their scale, so the design could become a single shelf or an entire book-stuffed wall of shelves – at this size the shelves become as architectural as they are decorative.

And then there are the bracket profiles... Read more in our journal or wait until tomorrow when we'll properly geek out about the brackets. by @matthewcoxetc

Looking at the Loupe light in all its glory again as we refreshed the web page this week.

As the sum of its parts, it is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Every process and component was developed to keep it elegant and relevant over time.

Handblown glass will only become more cherished. The patination is designed to evolve, and the crafts that have spun, blown and patinated this wall light into being will only become rarer over time. Certainly in this country.

We hope to keep supporting these skills and finding customers who value them (like our delightful clients Bari @blankslatestudio and Nina @ninacarbone pictured here)

News of potteries, glassblowers, weavers, metal spinners, foundries and workshops disappearing seems to pop up on Instagram every day. And once companies and one-man bands like these are gone, it’s unlikely they will return.

Instagram is great for eye candy, but some things, like this light, deserve a closer look.
