When Mark Holborn, the editor of In Flagrante, approached us about creating a new book it was impossible to say no. I knew from conversations with Chris how much he trusted Mark’s eye as an editor, and we gladly placed the entirety of Chris’s archive in his hands.

The resulting book is finally here: North, a restless journey through Chris’s years photographing across the North of England. Around half of the images have never been published before, and it’s been exciting to see photographs that have remained unseen, including quieter landscapes and smaller, more intimate moments, brought into conversation with images we have known and loved for years.

North is out in the UK today, published by @thamesandhudson , and will be released in the US on October 6th by @thamesandhudsonusa . A French edition, published by @editions_textuel , will also be released in October.

Needle of Death - M J Delaney Paul Hunter (1967)

Stark, process-driven documentation of an eighteen-year-old boy fixing. Delaney seems to have been a doctor rather than a professional photographer, yet he produced an indelible sequence of images - particularly the final three of the boy disappearing back into the West End crowd. by @matthewkillip

Story of Shinsekai - Kazuo Kitai (1983)

It’s been a long time … but here’s another Osaka book - Kazuo Kitai’s work from Shinsekai, Osaka’s entertainment district, full of cheap restaurants, bars, variety shows, pachinko parlors, and other kinds of ‘amusement’. I love the unshowy, almost modest way Kitai uses portraiture. by @matthewkillip

Osaka - Shigekazu Kawamura (1978)

Posting a few books from Osaka. First up, this rowdy banger, self-published by Shigekazu Kawamura, with an intro by Daido Moriyama. Gutter crossing, delirious and disorientating closeups, street scenes, pachinko, stage performers, neons, adverts, menus and TV screens - you never know where it’s going next - but always bringing a rough and rude feeling. Harajuku UFO - Yuko Nakamura (1980)

Late ‘70s Harajuku teen fashions captured by Yuko Nakamura, an amateur photographer who self-published this street style classic in 1980. Everyone’s here: Cream Soda rockers, Bamboo Shoot Tribe, Punks, Skaters - even Bosozoku. Hell on Wheels [STREET DESIGN FILE 05] ed. Kyoichi Tsuzuki (1998)

Here we see Bosozoku bike design as it enters its Decadent phase in the 90s 😂 Edited by Kyoichi Tsuzuki, a super interesting figure who started out as a journalist for Popeye and Brutus but has gone on to work as a photographer, writer, editor, curator and now even museum owner - basically he’s a don and I'll post more of his work coming up.
