When I first saw this photograph of the coast of the Isle of Man by Chris Killip in his new book North, image 1, I immediately thought about the painting by my Uncle Paul which is image 2 here. There is a striking similarity between the two works. Chris’s was made in 1970 and Paul Waplington’s sometime in the late 1950’s. My uncle is 88 now and still working. I will show him Chis’s photo when I next visit him. Chris I know was from the Isle of Man and Paul from Nottingham would make these paintings during the summer along the British coastline to sell to tourists as a young man. It’s good as always to make connections in art practice. On thst note its time for me to get to the studio. #chriskillip #paulwaplington

While I was away in the UK this arrived, a new Thomas & Hudson monograph of mainly unseen work by Chris Killip. It was edited by Mark Holborn and is beautifully designed, this includes a lovely slipcase. Holborn has found many interesting and meaningful unpublished images in the Killip archive. I notice that many of the photographs are not as technically perfect as the ones the photographer chose himself. Maybe that precision mattered to Chris as he was trained in advertising, who knows. To me it bears no consequence so we get to see many ‘new’ wonderful images here. I will spend along time with this book as the evenings draw in. Killip captured a world long gone and I will always wonder what he might photographed later in the 1980’s and 90’s in Britain. But he had the opportunity to move here to the USA and teach at Harvard. But that doesn’t really matter now as he left a wealth of material and I am sure more great photographs will emerge with time as scholars like Holborn dissect his archive. Order one now for Christmas as I’m sure the first edition will go quickly. Historical photobook of the year for sure, amazing.

When Mark Holborn, the editor of In Flagrante, approached us about creating a new book it was impossible to say no. I knew from conversations with Chris how much he trusted Mark’s eye as an editor, and we gladly placed the entirety of Chris’s archive in his hands. The resulting book is finally here: North, a restless journey through Chris’s years photographing across the North of England. Around half of the images have never been published before, and it’s been exciting to see photographs that have remained unseen, including quieter landscapes and smaller, more intimate moments, brought into conversation with images we have known and loved for years. North is out in the UK today, published by @thamesandhudson , and will be released in the US on October 6th by @thamesandhudsonusa . A French edition, published by @editions_textuel , will also be released in October. Homage to ‘Moira hand-picking in the very good fur coat’ by the amazing photographer Chris Killip I was asked by South East Open Studio to take a photo of myself in my studio, and I wanted to show how salvaging along the coast of the Isle of Sheppey has become an extension of my studio. Bread & Butter Studios are closed for 2 weeks as we're off on Hols to dip our toes in the sea.... Thankfully not in the North East of England unlike these wonderful images from Marketa Luskacova. Back in 2019 we worked closely with Marketa and @rrbphotobooks to create a homage to her trips made in the late 1970's up to the NE with her son @matthewkillip in tow. She filled us with stories of her fondness for the people and also her special biscuits for a good 6 month period as we worked making an edit of the work from her vast archives. It resulted in a solo show at the @martinparrfdn just before the Covid19 crisis. It looks as if Matthew enjoyed the trips too! Back 10th Feb, Stay classy x✌🏼
