Research for Midsummer Etruscan Feast at @rijksmuseummeermanno with @stijnkemper_ looking through books from the museum’s collection and tracing images, myths and visual references that are feeding into the new works.

These historical sources are becoming starting points for the porcelain and ceramic vessels, plates, paintings and other elements that will eventually come together around the table.

Persephone cornucopia vase for edible flowers, another work in progress for Midsummer Etruscan Feast.

The vase takes Persephone and the cornucopia as its starting points, bringing together ideas of abundance, fertility, the changing seasons and the passage between the world of the living and the underworld.

Designed to be filled with edible flowers, the piece is part of the growing series of ceramic and porcelain vessels I’m making for the feast, developed through research into Etruscan imagery, mythology and the collection of Huis van het Boek.

Still in process ,more from the project coming soon.

Medusa’s head honey jar A first glimpse into the making of Medusa, a ceramic jar for honey, part of my ongoing project Midsummer Etruscan Feast at Huis van het Boek.

For this project, I am developing a series of ceramic and porcelain jars, vessels and trays and paintings alongside paintings and other works, drawing from Etruscan imagery, mythology, and research into the collection of Huis van het Boek.

This Medusa head is still very much in process not the finished work, but one stage in the making of a vessel that will eventually hold honey.

Over the coming days and weeks I’ll be sharing more of the research, experiments and works as the project continues to take shape.

Very excited to see this world slowly coming together.

In early 2000's Italian public Elementary school offered a weekly hour of religion studies.

What it did offer though, apart from the space for me to draw an endless avalanche of bloody Old Testament imagery, was the monthly screening of Bible animated movies.
Once in one of these movies we saw Salome asking Herodes for John the Baptist's head, that whole sequence stayed with me forever.

In this painting, Saint John the Baptist appears in the moment after violence. Beheaded, his body begins to lose its human form. The upper body hardens and morphs into stone, becoming almost a cliff, a ruin, or a fragment of landscape.

I wanted him to exist between body and nature, between abstraction and figuration, realism and cartoonesque elements. by @mattiappp

Saint Christopher has always been the saint of crossings, the protector of travellers, the one who carries another through danger and uncertainty, potentially my favorite, colossal, strong, unyielding.

This painting became one of the key works in my practice. It started from the figure of Saint Christopher, but also from a very personal material moment, crazy pigments from Egypt that my mother had brought me when I was 10.

you can see their effect on the right bottom corner, swipe to see the detail.
This effect I call pigment migration, the correct term I think would be Chromatic separation. It would work when I’d throw raw unmixed pigment powder from above, or the side, on the wet canvas surface, and because the surface was wet, the pigment particles and soluble colour components were being pulled differently through the water and the absorbent surface. Some colours travelled faster, some stayed behind, so the “green” pigment opened up into its hidden components. It is very close to what happens in paper chromatography, where one dark ink line separates into blue, yellow, violet etc.

It’s worth noting that these pigments are actually dyes, Murex family, and extremely powerful ones I’d say. People and furniture close to me learnt to hate those pigments with a fervent passion. They’d spread like the plague in 14th century Europe, and there wasn’t a thing anyone could do about it.

Working with these pigments opened a new direction. Through colour, dust, surface, and their almost fetish-like presence, the painting began to move away from image and towards a more expanded form of making.

This work became a twilight moment in my practice, leading me from painting towards abstraction, sculpture, installation, and eventually the food performances I work with today.

But Christopher remains deeply connected to the present as the protector of travellers and of those who cross, he inevitably speaks to the crisis of migration in Europe, to bodies moving through borders, water, and those who die.

Saint Lucy was a young woman from Syracuse in Sicily, who, according to legend, refused an arranged marriage and gave her dowry to the poor. The man she rejected denounced her, and she was tortured and killed during the Roman persecutions. Her eyes became the central symbol of her story. In some versions they are taken from her; in others, she removes them herself, saying that her eyes belong only to Christ.
Traditionally, Saint Lucy protects sight, the blind, and those suffering from eye illness. In my own mythology, I also see her as a protector of women, especially those victims of domestic violence, and femicide. Her eyes, dark, see the violence that is often ignored, excused, or hidden, she refuses to turn a blind eye.
In this painting, I was also exploring fabric and surface as a kind of visual trick. The sleeves, veil, and textures are not painted realistically, but through flat effects, scratches, transfers, and repeated marks, almost like copied and pasted textures in early videogames or botched photoshop projects.

Saint Hieronymus ascends to the heavens through meditation.

I painted him as a figure dissolving into the forest, the cave, and the sky. At the time, I was very inspired by Adrian Ghenie, especially by the way his paintings break and distort the image through paint. And I was simply putting every sort of paint material on the canvas, boat lacquer, pigment, wall paint, anything

Here the saint becomes one with nature as Merlin does in certain Arthurian tales. by @mattiappp

Saint Sebastian has been following me for almost ten years now, and I him.

Growing up in Florence, saints are everywhere, in churches, on street corners, carved into stone, painted in ancient affrescos, judging you from altars, facades, and museum walls. They are part of the everyday visual vocabulary around me.

What started as a way to look back at saints and Catholic imagery and have so much fun with paint, has slowly become a whole world of new myths. I take these old icons out of their fixed religious meaning and bring them into the mess, violence, desire, fear, and survival of contemporary life.

Now this series is growing into a cross country exhibition project between cathedrals in Italy and the Netherlands, where these figures can return to sacred spaces with new stories attached to them.
