I was thinking to myself this am. You see we all want things but we all don’t have them. And there’s a fairly basic dived between the two. The Work.

Reminds me of my friend @yellowrunner and her motto of #dothework

Most of the things we want, whether they be seen or unseen are on the other side of “The Work.”

You want more success? - Do the Work
You want a better marriage? - Do the Work
You want more finance? - Do the Work
You want better results? - Do the Work
You want to be a better dad? - Do the Work
You want to run 100 miles? - Do the Work
You want to lose weight? - Do the Work
You want peace? - Do the Work
You want more faith? - Do the Work

While I know it’s all easier said than done, and The Work is usually longer and harder than you could imagine, when it’s done, there is glory knowing you earned it.

I hope this is an encouragement to someone today knowing that your “wants” are on the other side of your “work.” Just gotta start taking steps forward. by @mattmeddock

It’s been one week since completion. I’ve had time to process.

What I keep returning to is the idea of endurance. Running 100 miles takes endurance. But so does life. So does marriage, so does your work, so does parenting.

You see, running is easy IMO. One foot, then the next. If you do it long enough you go 100 miles. But the longest endurance race I have ever ran has been marriage. Then business for sure. Both of these I have been faced with the idea of giving up. Multiple times. Each time, beat up, trashed, hurt, mad, etc and I’ve said “not today.”

I’m not 100% sure I could respond with “not today” unless I’ve intentionally endured the pain that I went through.

Good news is that it’s all relative. You push the envelope of endurance that’s hard (for you.) eventually that hard thing becomes easier. And so does all endurance activities in your life.

I guess my encouragement to whoever is reading this is: do hard things. Help yourself make the (actual) hard things in your life easier. taken in Zion National Park by @mattmeddock

Every week someone in OC is trying to raise money for something.

A cause. Funding for a team. A youth group heading to camp.

Usually it lands on a parent or a volunteer who already has a lot on their plate.

I've always believed a local shop should show up for those people.

So we built Fundraising Sessions.

You pick a day at one of our shops. Your people come eat. Part of what they spend goes back to your cause.

It's an easy ask for your supporters, because everybody needs lunch anyway.

I love the picture of a whole team or class filling up the patio, cheering each other on over sandwiches.

That's what a neighborhood deli is for.

If you're the one organizing a fundraiser this year, shoot me a DM, or email me at matt@sessionswcd.com and we'll get you set up.

Thanks for supporting a small West Coast deli.

Divorce sucks…it’s hard….you never think it’s going to happen to you. Then it does. Not something I would have ever chosen, but I don’t get to choose all the time.

The only thing we can choose is how we deal with the cards that are given to us.

I’m happy to share that life is looking good. God has blessed me and my kids in ways that I would have never imagined. I truly believe the life that is becoming is on the other side of obedience.

My story is still being written. And the next chapters, I know will be the best yet.

I pray that this devotional (link in bio) touches the hearts of thousands of hurting people going through what I went through. I pray that it brings life and hope to their dark place. And I hope that they know that God is with them through it all.

Recently I talked about hospitality being my spiritual gift. A couple of people asked what that actually means outside of a church building.

Before I get into it, I want to say something about the people who have been with me doing this. Some of them a long time now. It says job on the schedule, and what they actually give this place goes way past that. I am grateful for every one of them.

Here is what it looks like on a Thursday.

It looks like somebody catching the door before a mom with a stroller has to figure it out on her own. It looks like knowing the guy who comes in at 11:15 does not feel like explaining his order again. It looks like reading a table and knowing whether these people want to be talked to or left alone.

None of that is on a training checklist. You cannot really teach it either. You can only hire people who already have it and then get out of their way.

Are we perfect at it? Not even close. Some days the line is long and we are behind and somebody waits longer than they should have. But we try, every shift, and the trying is the part I care about.

We have been doing this a long time and that is still the part of this job I like the most.

If you work in this industry, I want to hear from you. What is the smallest thing you do for people that nobody ever notices? Put it in the comments.

One version went out to the patio. That's not just eating, that's being part of OC life for a minute, watching the boards go by, letting the day slow down instead of chasing it. Somebody's dog is under the next table. Nobody cares. That's community, whether you came with five people or came alone.

One version left in a to go bag. That's us coming through your day instead of you stepping into ours. Maybe we're a stop on the way to somewhere else. Maybe it's just you, on your own time, no plans, no rush. Solo doesn't mean less.

One version fed a whole office, because somebody had to figure out lunch for a group and called us instead.

Here's the part people miss. However it reached you, you weren't only supporting Sessions. You were supporting the bakers, the growers, the local partners we build every sandwich from.

All three ways in are radical choices. Every one of them keeps something local standing.

Patio, pickup, or catering, which one were you today? Comment below.

Thanks for supporting a small business.

So here's the truth, I'm a church guy.

And often in Church people talk about spiritual gifts.

Well, shocker, mine is hospitality. Imagine that! Right?

So on a day like Labor Day, it gets me so stoked that people get a day off from working hard year round. But today (for people like me) it's our day to shine.

A few friends doing this well come to mind, figured it's a good opportunity to shout them out!

Hospitality is why we do what we do. This gift of hospitality that I was born with is meant to be given away.

So cruise in, give us some high fives, and let us live with purpose, doing what we were meant to do! taken in Orange County, California by @mattmeddock

Thirteen years into this, and yes, I still work the kitchen, the counter, the tables and patios, marketing--when I can.

Why, six locations in, would I still do that?

I'm a co-owner of Sessions alongside some of the best people I know. This isn't a job I'm doing for someone else. It's ours.

Some of you know us from the patio on a weekend. Some from a tray that showed up at your office on a Tuesday.

Different plate. Same standard.

Somebody's name is on that catering order. Somebody's family is at that table. Either way, if we're short, that's on us.

Right count, right labels, right time, every single time. Doesn't matter where you're eating it.

That's what Eating Radical means to me. Not a tagline. A habit I haven't broken in a decade.

Whether you're ordering for your team or grabbing a table this weekend, I want it boring in the best way. Everything there, nothing missing.

Shoot me a DM or comment RADICAL and I'll take care of it myself.

Thanks for trusting a small business with feeding your people.
