i’ve been in a year long courtship, intimately so. both of us sheltered from familiarity as he followed scavenger hunts to wherever i had set up home for a short while. because if a man were to come into my life, he also needed to earn his right to be where i am. following light footprints while boasting a reverence for the natural world.

one january night, this man arrives at my campsite in complete darkness via a dropped pin, no cell service, and replenishment of food and supplies in hand. this was kind of our first real date after he found me passing through a party in LA in december. matt describes the moment of walking towards my campfire as a nervous system reset, especially after the adrenaline of feeling too late, very lost, and maybe stood up because i wasn’t at the original pin. thankfully, he found the note i left behind.

this went on all winter into spring until by summer, he moved into the van.

february 7 marks the solar return of matt rising coming to this earth as a divine gift. traditionally he hosts his friends over dinner, wine, music, and writes a play to be performed by those around.

yesterday was different. there was still dinner, wine, music, friends, family, but this time he gathered us to celebrate our engagement! !!

matt and i are newly engaged and are overjoyed to finally lock in our eternal love and share abundantly

My father Nelson Rising passed away yesterday February 9th, at 5:50 pm — right after sunset — surrounded by me, my mother, my brother and his sister. He went peacefully.

He was an exceptional father to me, leading by example, providing deep love.

He was an extraordinary friend, mentor and supporter to so many, a shining example of loving those around you and spending the time and energy to create spectacular memories.

He was a civic leader who gave much of his life to service. At 27, he was John Tunney's campaign manager in a successful run for Senate, he was campaign chair and trusted advisor for Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley.

He was responsible for building the LA skyline leading the development of the US Bank building (tallest building in the West) and Gas Company Tower. He also spearheaded some of the largest redevelopments in California history, from Playa Vista to Mission Bay in San Francisco.

He ran public companies, he produced the movie The Candidate with Robert Redford. He served as chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank Western Branch, the California Redevelopment Agency, and much more. He met the needs of the times through his work. His life was full of purpose.

He was a story teller, he was an adventurer with trips to the other side of the world from Afghanistan to Iraq to Tahiti. He was fun, he was loving. He was my hero and a role model moving through the world with kindness, elegance and grace. Seeing humanity and respect in all those he came across, working for opportunity for all. He was a loving husband for 59 years. Father of 3, Grandfather of 3.

I am collecting stories of my dad so if you want to share any (via text, letter, voice note), i’d welcome them.

Since he is playing in LA today, I am throwing it back to one of my favorite moments of 2021. When I was in 3rd grade, I got exposed to Parliament Funkadelic and it just clicked with me - the outfits, the riddles, the funk - it all made me feel more me.

Thanks to @joey.rubin in July I had the honor to play records for George Clinton’s 80th birthday dinner. It felt like the culmination of years collecting funk records. @yolikegeorge even asked to see one of the records - he said it brought back memories from being in the studio with Bootsy! It was such a joy to play so many deep cuts for someone who has been such an impact on my life 🙏🏽

Shoutout to my universal funk odyssey squad for the support leading up to the show 🛸 🤘🏼 🎶 - and may the funk be with you in 2022 by @mattrising
