At the end of the day, we don’t get to control the chaos of the world. But we do get to control how we show up in it. And choosing kindness, especially now, might just be the most radical, healing, and world-changing thing we can do.

When people feel a little disconnected, you don’t necessarily need a big intervention to bring people closer. Sometimes you just need something meaningful to talk about.

A short, true story gives people a starting point. You read it together, then ask, “What do you think?” or “What would you have done?” And suddenly, instead of talking about homework, schedules, chores, or what’s for dinner, you're talking about kindness, choices, people, and what really matters.

Kindness doesn’t just help the person receiving it—it nourishes us, too. Helping someone, showing compassion, or simply making someone’s day a little better can leave us feeling more connected, fulfilled, and happy.

When someone is struggling or in crisis, their identity, past, or mistakes shouldn’t determine whether they deserve compassion and help. What matters most is seeing the person in front of you and recognizing their humanity.

You don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect to enjoy your life. There can still be good moments, joy, and gratitude right in the middle of the hard stuff.

What’s one good thing in your life right now?

Sometimes it’s easier to talk about important things when you’re not talking about yourself. Someone reads a 2–3 page true story about kindness, courage, generosity, or overcoming a challenge, and suddenly there’s an opening for conversation.
“What would you have done?”
“Have you ever experienced something like that?”

The stories in Kindness Heroes aren't just something to read; they're an easy doorway into conversations that might not otherwise happen.

I’m thinking how small acts of kindness done by lots of people can change the world.

For one dinner this week, put everyone's phones in another room. Then ask a “What if?” question. Or give everyone a story to react to.

What if you could spend one day anywhere in the world, where would you go? What if you could change one thing about your school? What if you could help one person tomorrow? What if you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would it be?

Questions like these don't have a right answer. They invite imagination. They make people think. And sometimes, they lead somewhere you never expected.

Or give everyone a story to react to. It doesn't have to be long. In fact, short is better. Read a two-page story about someone who did something kind for a stranger (Kindness Heroes book is perfect for this!). Then ask, “Would you have done the same thing?” Or, “Why do you think they did it?” Or simply, “What would you have done?”

Suddenly, you're not trying to force a conversation. You're talking about someone else, which can make it much easier for kids to jump in with their opinions.

And once the conversation starts, you never quite know where it will go.

That's where the magic happens.

Something we should all remember. Carrying hate and resentment hurts you more than it hurts the other person. Find a way to move past it so you can truly enjoy your life.
