The legendary Mikki Taylor said it best yesterday, “Don’t ask for permission when you own authority”. There’s something special about the BBR x NYFW Excellence Luncheon. I honestly struggle to put it into words because it’s more than an event, it’s a feeling.

It’s the feeling of walking into a room and seeing so much excellence, creativity, history, and possibility all in one place. A room where we aren’t the only, but one of many. Where the people shaping beauty and fashion can see one another, celebrate one another, and be reminded of just how much impact we have had on these industries. Where nothing else matters in those few hours we have together.

Every year, I’m struck by the stories in the room. The legends who paved the way and the next generation watching it all and realizing there is space for them too.

That’s why this luncheon means so much to me.

For a few hours, we get to create the kind of room I wish existed more often. A room filled with people who inspire us, challenge us, open doors, create opportunities, and continue to move our culture forward.

And somehow, each year I leave feeling fuller than when I walked in.

That feeling is hard to put into words.

Maybe that’s what makes it so special. 🤎

Congratulations to our incredible honorees @iamnialong @kingmalimagic @shunika.terry @altonmason @jawaraw @melinda_melrose @thelipsticklesbians who make excellence look effortless, have left an undeniable mark on the industry, and continue to leave it better than they found it.

When we did our walkthrough in December before we signed the contract, I remember saying I don’t know if we will fill it, but we will definitely try. It’s our first one.

Our community needs an elevated tradeshow experience centered on education, access to industry leading brands and meaningful networking. I had no experience with tradeshows so I called some important people for advice. They said you can do it and it’s necessary.

We heard 43 nos. Some yeses that then changed their mind. We persevered. I don’t know another place where you have prestige brands, professional brands, established and emerging Black owned brands all in one place along side incredible education, vibes, community and a hair battle. The best dressed beauty room. People have asked how I’m doing and all I can say is feet hurt and heart full.

I HAVE THE BEST TEAM IN THE WORLD,PERIOD.

We were dealt a massive blow 4 weeks before the event and they rose to the occasion even in the face of adversity. For people to compare our first beauty tradeshow show to other industry leading beauty events is incredibly humbling. Our biggest event to date. Faith of a mustard seed.

I reflect on not knowing if we were going to be able to fill it but had faith. There was a waitlist to speak and demo a waitlist to be a vendor, a waitlist for GA, a waitlist for VIP, a waitlist for everything. We truly underestimated the demand. We love everyone. Thank you for believing in the vision. We made history.

We’re proud to launch alongside Ulta Beauty and Through Beauty our All Textures Certification. 2.5 years of building, listening and refining. Hairstylists from all different backgrounds and experiences provided feedback and tested. What a journey it’s been.

A new standard that uplifts all hairstylists and makes sure all strands from straight to coily are taken care of in salon, on set and beyond. Many thanks to team Ulta. Here we go! 🚀 by @maudeyoaks
