CEL Ā VIE IS BACK.

After two incredible editions, CEL Ā VIE 3 opens this Friday at @mauergallery Berlin, with an entirely new selection of original Japanese animation art, much of it shown publicly for the first time.

And this third edition is going to be something special.

Original production cels, douga, genga and hand painted backgrounds spanning decades of Japanese animation. Dragon Ball, Dr. Slump, Akira, Spriggan, Black Jack, Naruto, Mazinger, Fist of the North Star, Kinnikuman, Vampire Hunter D, Saint Seiya, Sailor Moon, Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, Metal Armor Dragonar and many more.

From the worlds of Akira Toriyama, Katsuhiro Otomo, Go Nagai and Leiji Matsumoto, to cult productions, legendary studios and some of the most iconic characters in anime history, this new selection goes deep into the incredible craft behind Japanese animation.

CEL Ā VIE 3 is curated by Mauer Gallery and Ben & Julia, with original works from the Maison Saucisse collection.

NEW ON THE BLOG ✨ MATSURI OKUDA

If you collect original anime art, Matsuri Okuda is a name you need to know.

Behind the unforgettable beauty of Tenku Senki Shurato was an artist with an extraordinary sense of character, silhouette and expression. Long faces, elegant hands, extravagant hair, intense eyes and male heroes designed with an unmistakable influence from fashion, music and shōjo aesthetics.

But Shurato is only one part of the story.

Okuda also shaped the characters of Yoma, California Crisis and Legend of the Galactic Heroes, moving effortlessly from dark fantasy to pure 1980s pop illustration and space opera.

Our new article dives into her career, her drawing philosophy, the creation of the Shurato characters, the distinction between her character designs and the Shakti armour designs, and why her work remains so fascinating when studying original cels, douga, genga and model sheets today.

For collectors, this is where things get really interesting. Original production art lets you see the exact moment when Okuda’s elegant drawings were translated by different animation directors and animators into images made for the screen.

A beautiful face is one thing.

A character you still recognize thirty five years later is something else.

AKIRA: Kaneda Faces Tetsuo Blob Form – Production Douga (Toho, 1988)

We open a new chapter in our cel showcase with nothing less than a holy relic from AKIRA — the 1988 masterpiece by Katsuhiro Otomo, produced by TOHO. A film that forever redefined animation, not just in Japan but across the world.

This production douga comes from 01:51:01:00, as Kaneda confronts a now grotesquely mutating Tetsuo, mid-transformation into his infamous blob form. The moment is charged with emotional weight and terrifying spectacle — a metaphor for power unchained, identity lost, and friendship tested.

The sketch is dynamic, violent, and haunting — capturing a split-second of chaos that still resonates almost 40 years later. Every line screams Otomo’s perfectionism and visionary direction.

This is not just anime. This is cinema.

Dr. Slump: Poop Boy Morning Gym in The World – Final Tribute Cel (Toei Animation)

This marks the end of our week-long tribute to the legendary Akira Toriyama — may his soul rest in peace, and may his vision continue to shape hearts and imaginations across generations.

We close with the most joyful relic from our collection: Poop Boy, the iconic pink swirl of mischief, caught in mid-stretch during his morning gym session in The World — that strange and perfect place where Goku, Arale, and all things absurd coexist in harmony.

This hand-painted cel, complete with original background, radiates the essence of Toriyama’s storytelling: playful, unpredictable, and deeply sincere. The World isn’t just a setting — it’s a feeling. A universe where logic bends to laughter, and everything, even a poop, can become a beloved character.

From our hearts at @benandjulia studio, thank you, Akira. You made childhood richer, funnier, and endlessly more colorful. You taught us that imagination has no rules — just joy.

Continuing our Toriyama tribute with this fantastic piece: an original production cel featuring « God » from Dr. Slump—a character whose design clearly showcases early inspirations that would later evolve into the iconic Kame-Sennin (Master Roshi) from Dragon Ball!
