NEW ON THE BLOG ✨ MATSURI OKUDA If you collect original anime art, Matsuri Okuda is a name you need to know. Behind the unforgettable beauty of Tenku Senki Shurato was an artist with an extraordinary sense of character, silhouette and expression. Long faces, elegant hands, extravagant hair, intense eyes and male heroes designed with an unmistakable influence from fashion, music and shōjo aesthetics. But Shurato is only one part of the story. Okuda also shaped the characters of Yoma, California Crisis and Legend of the Galactic Heroes, moving effortlessly from dark fantasy to pure 1980s pop illustration and space opera. Our new article dives into her career, her drawing philosophy, the creation of the Shurato characters, the distinction between her character designs and the Shakti armour designs, and why her work remains so fascinating when studying original cels, douga, genga and model sheets today. For collectors, this is where things get really interesting. Original production art lets you see the exact moment when Okuda’s elegant drawings were translated by different animation directors and animators into images made for the screen. A beautiful face is one thing. A character you still recognize thirty five years later is something else. Read the full article now on our blog. Wang Taren, Original Production Animation Cel Sakigake!! Otokojuku, Toei Animation, 1988–1989 Character Design: Masami Suda A striking portrait of Wang Taren, built around one of Masami Suda’s most recognizable visual signatures: heavy, sculptural facial structure, deep-set eyes, and sharply controlled line weight. The elongated face, the rigid symmetry, and the exaggerated mustache are all pushed to an almost graphic extreme, a perfect example of Suda’s ability to balance caricature and authority. This cel comes from the late 1980s production era, when animation was still entirely hand-painted on acetate. The density of the linework and the precision of the color layers reflect the craftsmanship of Toei Animation at the time, especially on secondary yet highly distinctive characters like Wang Taren. Visually, this is pure Otokojuku: bold, theatrical, and instantly readable. The minimal background and strong frontal composition reinforce the character’s presence, turning the cel into a near-iconic portrait rather than just a frame of animation. A very “Sudaesque” piece, graphic, expressive, and unmistakably from this era. Akashi Gouji – Original Production Animation Cel (Multi-Layer) Sakigake!! Otokojuku, Toei Animation, 1988–1989 Character Design: Masami Suda A clean portrait shot of Akashi Gouji, built across multiple layered cels, a setup typical of higher-end production cuts where elements such as face, hair and foreground details are separated to enhance depth and control during shooting. The strength of Masami Suda’s design is fully visible here: heavy jaw structure, sharply angled brow line, and dense shadow work defining volume. Compared to Hokuto no Ken, the line is slightly more controlled and the expressions more playful, reflecting the tone of Otokojuku while keeping that same physical intensity. The cel retains its original studio markings, including numbering and cut references, directly linking it to its production sequence. Multi-layer cels from this period are significantly less common than single-layer setups, as many were separated or lost over time. Intact examples like this, especially in such a strong character portrait, are increasingly scarce on the market. A precise and well-preserved piece of late 80s Toei production art, and a very solid representation of Suda’s work on Otokojuku. Bandit, Fist of the North Star 2 / Original Layout, Genga, mouth Expression & Douga (Episode 117) Pure Hokuto no Ken Pencil work and awesome character design. Sweat, tension, asymmetry, everything is pushed to the edge. The anatomy breaks just enough to sell fear and impact. Full production set with layout, genga and douga. You can see the construction of the expression: from rough staging to final intensity. Even without a named character, this is where the series shines, raw design, extreme emotion, unmistakable style. Ein, Fist of the North Star / Original Animation Genga & Douga + Storyboard ref annotated Set (Episode 117) An original production animation set from Fist of the North Star 2, featuring Ein in a rare quiet moment at the end of Episode 117. The scene shows Ein injured, lying still as he recovers, a transitional shot that contrasts with the series’ usual intensity. Rather than action, the focus here is on presence, and pencil work. This set includes the full construction of the cut: layout, genga and douga. It reveals the complete animation process, from initial composition and camera framing to refined key animation and in-between movement. The layout defines the scene with precise framing and background indications, while the genga establishes the structure of the pose. The douga defines the outlines, incorporates shadow and reflection effects while maintaining volume and consistency across the sequence. **Fist of the North Star, Jakoh Animation Sequence Part 2** The continuation of a rare extended animation sequence, capturing the peak intensity of a single shot. As the movement unfolds, Jakoh’s face collapses into extreme distortion — lines sharpen, volumes stretch, and the drawing itself becomes more aggressive. This is where the animation reaches its breaking point. The sequence reveals the transition from controlled construction to raw expressive force, a defining characteristic of Hokuto no Ken’s most striking moments. Several drawings in this group show heightened line pressure, rapid corrections, and visible animator decisions, evidence of the search for impact within motion. From restrained expression to full release, this second part completes the temporal arc of the shot. Seen together with Part 1, the sequence forms a continuous fragment of animation, not as image, but as energy unfolding through time.
