My birthday weekend! ⭐️57⭐️ Saturday started with a beautiful day on the trail with great friends, followed by breakfast. My friends always have a way of making every birthday feel so special.

Then today, on my actual birthday, I celebrated by running 57K (unsupported) around the east side of Oʻahu—part of it alongside my oldest—followed by dinner with my family.

People often ask me why I like to make such a big deal about my birthday. The truth is, you never know how many birthdays you have left.

I’m incredibly thankful for the people I get to share these moments with, for the adventures, and for a body that keeps up with my schemes and dreams. 😂

Still trying to make every day an adventure! ❤️ by @maukamel

Alpenglow 100K – Valemount, British Columbia, 64 miles and over 16,500 feet. Some races leave you with a medal. Others leave you with an epic story... Alpenglow delivered it all. Late last year, I started searching for a race that would push me outside my comfort zone. Well dreams came true in the remote wilderness surrounding Valemount, British Columbia. An epic mountain adventure boasting more than 16,000 feet of elevation gain, one climb alone gained over 5,000 feet, with grades exceeding 46%. This would be my first true big mountain race, surrounded by the incredible convergence of three mountain ranges: the Canadian Rockies, the Monashee Mountains, and the Cariboo Mountains. As if the terrain wasn’t enough, the race began at 8:30 p.m., meaning we’d spend an entire day awake before running through the night and into Saturday. Sleep deprivation would become just another obstacle to overcome.

The forecast called for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning. Still, mountain weather is unpredictable, and we remained optimistic. We started beneath clear skies, climbing smoothly along beautiful winding trails. The first climb felt almost effortless. Our legs were fresh, and years of training on Tantalus had us feeling right at home on the endless ascent. We couldn’t wait to see what the mountains had in store.

Then, less than an hour into the race, everything changed. (CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS) taken in Valemount, British Columbia by @maukamel

Another episode of first flight and last flight out. This time I drafted a route that included running up Crater Road to the 10,000 ft. summit, a dip into the crater on trail, across the crater, and up Halemau’u switchbacks to the Supply trail. All starting and ending at the Hosmer Grove campground. So grateful to have friends that never thought twice about joining. A solid group of runners. Just about 26 miles and 6000 feet. When this is just a training run for your big race, you know you’re the good kind of crazy. ❤️ Heart is full. #haleakalanationalpark #trainingrun #ultrarunning #funwithfriends #alpenglowtraining taken in Haleakala National Park by @maukamel

For over 2,500 days, I drove you to and from school. Signed countless permission slips, helped with homework, and talked through every kind of problem — friends, bullies, unfair teachers, all of it. I wouldn’t have missed a single moment. You made me a mom, and now I get to watch you become whoever you want to be. That is such a gift. I’m endlessly proud of you, @caden_koehl ❤️
And ALSO… can we talk about how graduation in Hawaiʻi is just different? There’s nowhere else in the world quite like this. Lucky we live Hawaiʻi. 🌺 @honoluluwaldorf @kaiserhighschool_hi by @maukamel

Tough day at the office. 💪 This race is a beast. #iykyk Only 5 miles but running up and down steep rooted trail and bounding over sections of rocks requires strong muscles and connective tissue! Working hard every day. PR’d the course even though I’m more cautious on the downs, I’m perfecting my ups. 6th woman OA. Age is just a number. Let’s run until the wheels fall off. #trailrunning #hawaiirunning #fitover50

Just running down a canyon and into two billion years of history. No biggie ❤️ When @annahadabigday asks you if you want to run around a big ‘ol canyon, the answer is always “yes”. Thankful for … a body that can do this epic adventure, badass female friends, and a family that knows that these experiences are a part of my DNA. ❤️ 37 miles, 7,500 feet from South Kaibab to Ribbon Falls, back up the South to Tonto and up Bright Angel. The hardest part was running the road back to the car at the finish. 🤣 #ultrarunning #trailrunning #epicadventure #squadgoals @annahadabigday @rosiejean808 @emoneeeey @ddcote @kendrabeanie taken in Grand Canyon National Park by @maukamel

2025: Iʻve run so many memorable places, even the familiar take on a new meaning each time. It’s remarkable how a single photograph can transport you back to how you felt in that moment. Photos become anchors for memory, holding onto the feeling of a place long after you’ve left it. Here are my favorite landscapes of this past year. It was a good year despite an ankle fracture in July. May your 2026 be filled with health and happiness, too! (Not included in this distance stat is my weight training. 100 hours over the past year, thatʻs 145 sessions / 3x per week. Hereʻs to getting even stronger). #trailrunner #weighttraining #strava #2025 by @maukamel

Late post but a great wrap-up race for 2025! 🎁 The Honolulu Marathon! And no, it wasnʻt as bad as people say... no rain, no rainbows! I do a 20-30 mile training run every weekend, but somehow this race hits different. Love this community of runners, cheerleaders, and volunteers. First time having a celebratory beer across the street afterwards. Love my friends! HM #14! #honolulumarathon #runforfun #trailrunner by @maukamel

Imagine hiking from 10,000 ft toward a lone cabin hidden deep within a landscape accessible only by foot—a place so silent, so vast, it feels like stepping onto another planet. Haleakalā’s crater stretches around you like an amphitheater, its cinder cones glowing under the shifting light. In this immense quiet, it’s just five lucky souls, a scattering of curious nēnē, and a single cabin standing at the center of it all: Kalapaoa. ❤️

As the sun sets into the rim of the crater, colors play across the volcanic slopes, giving way to a sky overflowing with stars and a brilliant full moon. The stillness is almost deafening, a reminder of how small you are and how rare it is to be here—how fortunate to have secured a place in this sacred, hidden world.

With a wonderful group of strong women—ultra-runners capable of carrying fifty-pound packs down (and later back up) the crater’s steep walls—you spend the days running freely, weightless, along miles of rugged trail to the other cabins tucked at opposite ends of the park. Evenings gather everyone back together, sharing stories, laughter, and dreams of future adventures in the warm glow of the cabin.

It became another soul-filling experience—one that will stay with me forever. Haleakalā never fails to leave me speechless. Forever grateful for this slice of heaven on Maui.❤️ 28 miles #runventure #cozytown #trailrunner #fullmoon #chuckerhat #youdontknowmegraham #alaskaman #kapalaoa #haleakalanationalpark #mauinokaoi taken in Haleakala Volcano Summit, 10,023 ft. by @maukamel
