I'm upping the ante here by introducing a side of myself which shows my art practice beyond the boundaries of many viewers' expectations! I began sculpting in mixed media some 25 years ago or more. Much of it was basically assemblage, inspired by sculptors such as Caro, and also Dr. Jonathan Miller who also had this 2nd string to his bow! My early works could be described as somewhere in between textured wall reliefs and 2D sculpture, if there is even such a thing! However, following years of believing my work was too niche, I simply took a different path. Unwise decision, on reflection. But, what's done is done. Or is it? To answer that question is to present my 2nd Instagram account, @maureengraysonsculptor. It's only hours old so, please allow me time to add some posts, and watch this space!!!😆

Of course I went into cardiac arrest when I discovered I'd been selected for this year's @ingdiscerningeye at the Mall Galleries, London! Well, what do you expect on a miserable, dark, and wet day out there?!!! Mainly inspired by the ponds on the Hampstead Heath extension, the music of Claude Debussy simply owned the title for this work. 'Rêverie' is a 10 x 12ins mixed media painting on paper. I'm still reeling in disbelief I got selected. Oh well, let's face it; this will be the closest I'll get to Buckingham Palace this year!!!

GENESIS, the beginning, a fusion of the forces of creation. This is the 2nd of 3 pieces currently entered into one of many Open Calls. '1-2-3', put together in that way, it sounds very much like a game of numbers! However, that wasn't exactly the intention here, but rather my own realisation as to the ridiculous amount of my life is being taken up with these endless 'opportunities'! This is another of my 60 x 60cm mixed media pieces on canvas. Perhaps it will go places? Other than down in my garage till eternity!!!

PORTAL is a mixed media, highly textured, 60 x 60 cm work on canvas. It's one of 3 pieces currently entered into one of those major Open Calls you dream about being selected for. Of course, one has to be realistic as 100s, if not 1000s, of other hopefuls and wannabes are dreaming the same misguided illusion. As the saying goes, time and again; you have to be in it to win it. And so I am! So much am I in it, that I've quite forgotten as to what exactly I entered for. Pitiful, innit?!!! 🤭

You can tell autumn's starting to take hold. Not only are the acorns on the ground, but yours truly is firmly embracing the best time of year, that special excuse for totally indulging in damp, decay, and impending darkness! What better than to revisit Hampstead's iconic ponds and surrounding wetlands? These 2 little mixed media compositions are about to be entered into a local gallery's Christmas show. They are each 8 x 8ins, set into 10 x 10ins white frames. And without wishing to repeat myself, I will! Good luck with that, Mozer!!! 😆🤭

Not a mention of any more Open Calls for now, so just relax! These 2 mixed media landscapes are fresh off my (cluttered) work table and precariously placed on my studio floor at the mercy of both 'studio assistants'! That said, I'll introduce them in order. The first is: PHOENIX RISING, the second: MORTLAKE. Both are mixed media 8 x 8ins on wood panels, set into white 10 x 10ins frames. Price: £325 each with FREE p&p within the UK. Available to buy on my website and @womeninart_marketplace. Ideal for collectors with limited art space!!!

There are ways of capturing images in perspective. Unfortunately, I constantly struggle to achieve this! It's the framed works where I tend to fail. Oh well, excuses over; here are 3 of my latest (small) efforts. Conceived as a set, each is mixed media on canvas, Size: 4 x 8ins. Set in a deep box frame: 9 x 12ins. For now, I'll simply have to refer to them as Nos. 1, 2, and 3. Why? No titles as yet. Obvious, innit?!!!

The Face of Urban Decay, an updated work in progress which remains a work in progress! Set against a backdrop of a 60 x 60cm highly textured relief canvas, I thought the two should be put together to form one single piece. The only question is, do I submit this as a sculpture or installation? It was only ever conceived as a sculpture, but I just feel the back panel enhances the rather ghastly experience! Any experts out there able to define the boundaries of sculpture before it becomes anything more?

This just has to be the tip of the iceberg among a further onslaught of Open Calls! Am I REALLY doing this in the hope of actually getting anything other than a 'no thank you' or 'p*ss off!' back? I'm seriously wondering if I have a hidden masochistic streak running through me? Have I a secret passion for the, 'sorry, not this time(s)'??? Just imagine the rare occurrence of getting a 'YES'! Go on, close your eyes and dream along with the Mozer! Feels good, innit?! I'll not jinx things by naming the Call, but these 2 (mounted & framed) 10 x 12ins media pieces on paper are heading their way to a jury imminently!!! YAY!!!

Running around like headless chickens! Buzzing about like blue-ar$ed flies! YES, it's THAT time of year again when all the major Open Calls entice you to enter and throw caution to the wind! Why do we do it? Is this a way of revealing our masochistic streaks? Yes, we KNOW all we're likely to get out of any of it are a string of rejections; OH, but the pain is kind of delightful when it arrives bang on time, and worded so delicately! 'No thank you' ... 'It's with regret' ... 'Unfortunately' ... BUT, what IF??? Yeah, there's always that!!! 😁😆😁🙏

Who sez ya can't relive past glories?!!! So, we return here to the @hampsteadsummerfestival and the Art Fair which took place @keatshousemuseum on June 21st. A magnificent display of artworks from local artists, and beyond, were once again presented by the prestigious @hampstead_school_of_art and @isabelhlangtry. I had the honour of receiving the Annie Ward Prize for my mixed media painting, 'Anatomy of Space' which is, btw, available for sale via the fabulous new @womeninart_marketplace. And why am I posting this a month after the event? Well, I was only sent the video clip a couple of days ago!!!😆
