We keep us safe. Our collective resistance keeps us safe from the harms of our government and oppressive systems.

The work is just beginning, but today, we can grieve. We hope you are held as much as you hold, and that you can find slivers of comfort and joy around you. None of us are alone and good hearted people are still everywhere. Don’t forget how much that means.

I think it’s rare to be part of an art form like this for 10 years and to be lucky enough to have been in so many amazing vocal jazz ensembles. A few nights ago I had my last performance with one of the best ever, and so I wanted to share an arrangement that I was so honored to write for them in the Spring. The people in this ensemble mean the world to me and I’m so grateful to them for embracing this arrangement and bringing it to life. To PST 22-23, thank you and I love you all so much. End of an era🖤💛

This arrangement is based off a recording called Images by Nina Simone, one of my all time favorite singers/pianists/activists/artists/humans. It tells the story of a black maid who is unable to recognize her beauty in the reflection she sees in the dirty dishwater. This story is true for too many women of color who’ve been made to feel like the color of their skin, the texture of their hair, the shape of their eyes, noses, lips, and bodies, aren’t beautiful. With this arrangement, I wanted to pay tribute to the poet Waring Cuney, Nina Simone, and anyone who’s ever felt unworthy of love because of euro-centric beauty standards.

She does not know
her beauty,
she thinks her brown body
has no glory.

If she could dance
naked
under palm trees
and see her image in the river,
she would know.

But there are no palm trees
on the street,
and dish water gives back
no images. by @max_smithhhh
