This week Woodlawn is partnering with the University of Oregon Concordia for a special edition of market on the U of O Campus! So we will be there at 2800 NE Liberty from 9-1 tomorrow instead of in the usual spot on Dekum, with a really beautiful spread of breads and pastries and things! Khorasan Loaf - 33% freshly milled Khorasan wheat flour with @cairnspringmills Expresso and @camascountrymill Sifted White Wheat
Khorasan is one of the “ancient grains” - an older relative of Durum that comes from Central Asia and was one of the early grains domesticated by agricultural societies in the Fertile Crescent. It has a beautiful crackery buttery flavor and golden color, and it is a joy to bake with. We’ll have loaves of this bread, alongside all the usual suspects at the King Market this Sunday, rain or shine. Hope to see you there! taken in King Elementary School by @maxines.pdx

At the turning points between the seasons the horizons in the produce world seem to stretch even further than normal. Weeks like this make me questions whether or not this whole bakery project might not at least in part be an excuse/enabler of a crippling produce buying/hoarding addiction. At both of Wednesday’s midweek markets and today’s PSU market it was impossible to resist the call of one of the widest varieties of fruit and vegetable diversity or the whole year and it’s safe to say we have way too much food on our hands this weekend. There are decisions to be made - which plums for the Danish and which for the winter? - which tomatoes for focaccia and which for the savory pastry? - can we do plain, grape, and tomatillo slabs? - is there time to make the peach jam today or does it have to wait till next week?
The diversity of fruits, vegetables, and grains in this weeks menu is something I feel proud of and so so so grateful for. Y’all really have been showing up for us this summer and this week feels like a bit of a celebration. There will be a lot of bread tomorrow, a lot of pastries, a lot of cake, a lot of cookies….its a feast in the making. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the season and the people growing all the beautiful food we get to work with, who are too numerous to name with lists of prep and questions as long as they still are this late in the day.

Y’all cleaned us out of bread at the last Woodlawn Market we attended 2 weeks ago, we’re bringing a little more in hopes of having enough for everyone! Should be a beautiful morning and a great opportunity to fill your baskets with all the summer goodness they can hold, hope we see ya at the market! by @maxines.pdx

Getting things started again in the bakery this week after what was probably our all time greatest bake last Sunday - after a couple of months of just trying to keep up and get things made in the new space it feels like we’ve finally hit a bit of a stride and the work is feeling beautiful again 🌾 the bread and the pastries really seemed to reflect that to me, hope y’all were able to taste it too!
Got the chance to get out on a big walk this weekend and find some wild blueberries in the Mt Hood wilderness, my first recreational forage of the year and perhaps a sign of some things coming to the menu in the next few weeks??

We’ll be back wtf the @woodlawnfarmersmarket this week for our 3rd time, and I must admit things there have been off to a bit of a slower start than I had anticipated - it has been a long time since we’ve done a new market and perhaps the growing pains are just a part of the process, but I’m wondering if there’s something we could be doing to get bread in people’s hands on those Saturday weeks that I’m not thinking of? Is the market too far? Too small? Folks too busy? At other markets? Would people be interested in an alternate bread/pastry pick up situation in another part of town? Pre orders? We have got the capacity to make much more than we currently are those weeks and while I’m not not loving the lighter prep days, the piggy bank is still very much in recovery from the bakery move and we could stand to be selling a few more loaves and things those weeks! If any restaurants or distros or really anyone would be interested in collaborating on some bread or pastry things for the next few months, we’d love to talk to you. We love making bread! We love sharing it with the community! And we need your help to make it happen! We’re just a few guys trying to feed people food we believe in and make it as accessible as possible.
That’s my rant/brainstorm/cry for help, there’s croissant dough with a healthy scoop of @chimacumgrain Whole Rye waiting for me in the mixer bowl inspired by a good bread chat with @hillbillybread to be portioned out. Send a DM if you’ve got thought to share 💭⌨️🌀 taken in Woodlawn Neighborhood Farmers Market by @maxines.pdx
