Sometimes I feel like my life is a Rocky movie.

I’ve been hit so many times throughout my youth — from losing my dad, to never quite fitting in at school, to struggling with my career. Punch after punch.

So it feels so good to finally feel like I’m winning again.

To anyone feeling down right now: don’t just sit around hoping things will get better. Do something about it. When I quit my job, I had no idea what it would entail. All I knew was that I had the willpower and motivation to make it work.

And that’s all you need at the end of the day — a dream, and the willpower to get you there.

I’m so thankful for the position I’m in right now, and more than anything I want to help other people get there too.

HIKE SUMMARY ā¬‡ļø

Mt. Kaitarakihi - 8km out and back hike — summit elevation 852m. Started in the dark, wound through bush for the first 3km before it kicked pretty much straight uphill for the last km — most of the elevation gain packed into that final 200m, with chains bolted in to help on the steep rock face near the top. Gets technical near the summit so make sure you're fit for it. Some seriously cool exposed sections on the way down too. Cloudy and windy the whole way but still a really fun hike + got some clear weather at the top. Stoked with this one. S/o @conor.explores for the spot suggestion šŸ¤™šŸ¤™ by @maxrawfitness

HIKE SUMMARY ā¬‡ļø

Started off at 3:50 a.m.
Originally woke up at 2:50 a.m., then realised pretty much every hike I’ve done has taken me about half the time I expected, so I went back to sleep for a bit.

The hike itself was actually super smooth — really peaceful in the dark, not scary at all, and honestly pretty fun just making my way up. A head torch is pretty much a must, but besides that it was straightforward.

The Mt. Karori part took me about 2.5 hours, pretty similar to Mt. Perengea.

Getting to the top was unreal. The sunrise was amazing, and from the platform you basically get a full 360 view. I was definitely pretty tired on the way down, but we made it back.

Raglan was such a cool little town too.

And Bridal Veil Falls was insane — probably the best waterfall I’ve ever seen in my life. Highly recommend.

I cut so many clips from this one that I’m starting to think these trips need to become proper YouTube videos.

Watch out for the next one. by @maxrawfitness

Bulgarian split squats are great for building quad and glute strength while providing a strong muscle stimulus.

They also put you in a position that requires good hip coordination and pelvic control. This can be useful if you struggle with hip stability during deadlifts or keeping your pelvis stable during leg extensions and hamstring curls.

Being able to balance and coordinate your hips is also valuable when moving on uneven or unstable ground, making this a useful movement beyond just building muscle.

5 epic hikes under 3 hours from Auckland 🄾

šŸ“ Bream Head
Very steep to start, but you hit the viewpoint pretty quickly. You can turn around there and skip the full loop, which makes it a 2-3 hour hike. One of the craziest views I’ve seen at the top.

šŸ“ Mount Kaitarakihi
Hard one. Some cliff-exposed sections and chains to climb near the end. Moderate distance, and not much climbing until the final push to the summit. Take care if it’s wet, the chains get slippery.

šŸ“ Mount Pirongia
Not the hardest on this list, but it’s a long one with a lot of elevation. There’s a good hut near the top, and a platform at the summit that sits above the trees with views over the mountains.

šŸ“ Mount Karioi
One of my favourites. You get the whole Waikato from the top, and on a clear day you can see Ruapehu, Taranaki and NgaĢ„ruahoe. Pretty cruisy hike with great bush the whole way.

šŸ“ Pinnacles
Probably the most well-known of the five. Long hike, but the track isn’t too difficult. There’s a hut if you want to stay the night (book ahead). The rock formations near the top are sick, there are ladders to climb, and it’s a great sunrise spot.

HIKE SUMMARY ā¬‡ļø

Summit, 5 minutes before sunrise.

The sky went a shade of red I've never seen before, with a 360 view on every side.

Getting there, the ski field was easy. Above the last chairlift it turned icy, so we cut across to the ridge, which was basically ice stairs but still very dodgy. Crampons and an ice axe were the only way up.

Perfect conditions, zero wind and clear skies, but one slip and you slide most of the way down.

One of the scariest and greatest experiences of my life. I only felt ready to try it because I trust my body.

Thanks to @gunadventures for guiding me up. Calm the whole way, and never made me feel rushed. by @maxrawfitness

Stretching is just a form of movement. If you like stretching…stretch (appropriately) If you don’t, you don’t need to in order to get the benefits. The most important thing is that you MOVE. by @maxrawfitness

Not one of my usual posts, but something I thought was worth talking about because I feel like a lot of people are in my position that feel stuck in whatever they’re doing.

I genuinely had low level anxiety constantly and since that has been removed from my life I’ve been able to operate so much better.

It’s not normal to hate your day-to-day constantly. Find something you love and go all in on it. by @maxrawfitness

Te Waihou Blue Springs Walk, Putāruru

This genuinely felt like one of the most surreal places I’ve seen in New Zealand.

The water is so clear it almost doesn’t look real, the colours look straight out of a movie, and the whole walk feels like you’ve stumbled onto another planet.

It’s an easy stop if you’re heading through the Waikato, and easily one of the coolest spots I’ve been to that’s still not on enough people’s radar.

Definitely try go earlier if you want it a bit quieter. by @maxrawfitness

Lying or seated hamstrings curls are super effective at strengthening up the muscle, easy setup, easy to recover from. If you have one of these at your gym I highly recommend taking advantage of it. by @maxrawfitness
