@breitling knows how to do a good reissue. The Navitimer B09 Tribute to Miles Davis watches are absolutely sublime, and are great way to get a vintage look and feel without buying a classic piece and potentially dealing with old watch issues. The only problem is the price…a new watch is nice but at double the price of a quality vintage piece, I’m not sure many collectors will go that route. Oh, and the packaging that modern Breitling watches come with really has no business being on watches at this price point. A great evening with fellow collectors, putting some of our favorite pieces side by side and talking about what really drives this hobby. The passion, the obsession, the stories, and the hunt.

We talked movements, references, vintage quirks, market shifts, and the pieces that somehow become impossible to buy the moment everyone decides they’re “the next big thing.”

We shared market insights, traded experiences, and, of course, had a few good rants about indies and VCs turning scarcity and unattainability into part of the hype.

Hard to beat @longines when it comes to their Heritage watches. The Military 1938 is a damn near 1:1 copy of the ref. 4092 and I love it. The only thing it lacks is a textured dial surface and it would have been perfect. #flectofriday

Ever since I found out that Gene Kranz, Chief Flight Director of the Apollo 13 mission wore a white-dial Seiko 5 6119-8460 Sports Diver, I’ve wanted one for my collection. I looked for years and never quite found one that wasn’t a complete wreck or was super expensive and still a complete wreck. So when Seiko announced they were doing a re-edition of that watch, I was over the moon.

I was excited when I got the call that my watch had arrived but also worried, going off Seiko’s recent track record of overpriced, chunky and poor quality nonsense. I didn’t bother with ‘reviews’ of course given seemingly everyone in watch media is on the take, so I had no idea what to expect. Handling the watch and trying it on for the first time put all my worries to rest - for the first time in what feels like years, Seiko has produced an absolute banger.

Close enough to the original, surprisingly well-priced at around $500, and sporting a look and feel that’s far elevated compared to their recent offerings, this watch reminded me of why I got into Seiko to begin with. The Alaska Project will be an ever present reminder of the good old days of watch collecting via the internet. This was bought from a guy on TheRolexForums who I had no other interaction with apart from messaging him about the watch and if he’d ship to Dubai.

A few days after the first messages were exchanged, I wired the money and three days after that, the watch was with me safe and sound, having come all the way from Seattle - no apps/Paypal, no seller ratings, no insurance, no social media. Just the trust that the folks on the forums were good people nerding out about things that the majority of the world didn’t care for.
