A while ago, I was approached by Marc Bollansee, a writer who recently created a rich catalog of contemporary composers, which can be reached at contemporaryclassicalnow.com. When he reached out to me, he asked if I could share a few thoughts about my music. I wrote back with the (somewhat pedantic) text that I’ve shared above, if it’s of interest!

I’ve been teaching a lot lately, both private students and classes, and have also been reflecting on my own creative practice. In lessons, one of the ideas that I’ve brought up often is that of having an original voice. On this topic, I usually ask two questions:

1. When listening to something, how do we know which artist we are listening to?
2. When listening to something, how do we know what we are listening to?

Some basic questions, but with enough thought (or in my case, neurosis), I find it can become an interesting and fruitful exercise.

So much of what artists care about and sound like has to do with their own embodied experiences as people and artists via education and practice. I’ve talked a little bit above about how this relates to my own sound and musical identity. If you’ve made it this far…thanks!…and we should probably all log off this app anyway. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @maxvinetz

Finally returning home after nearly 6 weeks on the road, with many new memories to ring in my 30th year!

1: 30th birthday dinner, featuring the handsome mugs of @jackbroza and @griffinbrown_

2-3: scenes from the Cone Institute (one of the most amazing orchestra experiences of my life), with many hangs and much ice cream consumed

4: selfie from my presentation to the composers at @nyo.usa, thanks to @seanshepherdcomposer for inviting me!

5-12: scenes from Soaring Gardens, featuring my dreamy studio, animals, and lots of yummy home cooking

13-17: residency with @latitude49music at @iparkct, with lots of walks through the woods and art installations

18-20: moments from an unforgettable weekend celebrating the marriage of two legends, @jacktannenbaum and @anniecaminiti (Jannie4Life) by @maxvinetz

Meet @njsymphony’s Cone Composition Institute composer @maxvinetz! Max is an award-winning composer whose music thrives at the intersection of improvisatory, popular, and traditional classical forms, exploring how these convergences shape and reflect identity transformation over time.

Max’s piece, Any Thing Passes, took inspiration from the beautiful views of nature on drive from Aspen to Santa Fe. ⛰️

Get your tickets to hear Max’s piece performed live July 18 at njsymphony.org/scores or 🔗 in bio.
