Welcome to Thurnauer MAX VINETZ! Max is an award-winning composer and will be our new department chair of Musicianship and Composition.

Originally from San Diego, California, composer and educator Max Vinetz has taught composition, music theory, music production, and musicianship to students of all ages, from middle and high school students to university undergraduates and graduate composers. He holds a B.A. from Yale University, an M.M. from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, and an M.F.A. and Ph.D. in Music Composition from Princeton University. His principal teachers and mentors include Steve Mackey, Donnacha Dennehy, Christopher Theofanidis, Dan Trueman, Tyondai Braxton, Juri Seo, Kathryn Alexander, Kurt Stallmann, and Karim Al-Zand. Max’s music has been described as “accomplished and appealing” (San Diego Story) and “shimmering…euphoric” (Chicago Classical Review), and has been performed by ensembles including JACK Quartet, Alarm Will Sound, Sō Percussion, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. His honors include commissions from the Fromm Foundation and Koussevitzky Music Foundation, the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Jacob Druckman Prize from the Aspen Music Festival, the ASCAP Leo Kaplan Award, three ASCAP Morton Gould Composer Awards, and the ASCAP Leonard Bernstein Award. As a teacher, Max emphasizes curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration, encouraging students to develop a distinctive musical voice while building the technical and analytical tools necessary to realize their ideas. He believes that composition study should connect listening, creativity, and practical musicianship, and strives to meet each student at their individual level and interests. Max resides in Brooklyn, New York.

@soaringgardens and Ora Lerman, you are forever in my heart and soul. SO MUCH GRATITUDE for 3 weeks at this incredible place to create, rest, connect, doubt, heal, grieve, grow, learn, transform. @art_of_the_oak (Jordan) you were--are!--a great program manager, "roommate" and kindred spirit. @blackhistorymaven (Kalela), @fay.ku (Fay), @maxvinetz (Max) and @ejiro_elizabeth_edward (Elizabeth) --my fellow resident artists/cohort--you're a part of my practice from this moment forward. Despite all that life keeps throwing at me, I KNOW how fortunate I am in oh-so-many ways! I will keep saying yes, keeping showing up, keep being me and stay true to my joy and my purpose. ⁣
⁣
My official "meet the residents" text: I am so grateful to Ora’s spirit (a kindred spirit), and to her creative spaces (especially my beloved church studio) for all the inspiration provided during my three weeks at Soaring Gardens! I absorbed every bit of the serendipitous magic that came my way and found connections between my long-time puppetry practice and the new-to-me clown work that will be at the heart of my work/play when I head to Mexico in November on a tour with Clowns Without Borders. I “met” my clown (working name SaraAnn Dippity), taught myself to juggle scarves, reconnected with the power of games, expanded puppetry bits into clown routines, designed and built puppets (an ensemble puppet, a parade puppet–and a marionette!), made the perfect music playlists for discovery, created several short participatory songs in Spanish, did lots of reading on physical comedy and simple clown– and became obsessed with the Mozi flow ring. I found time, too, to start reworking my solo puppet show “Picnic!,” taking home a new picnic basket stage, a new script AND a new opening sequence. Yoga, journaling, walks and rest allowed me to settle into the rhythms of the countryside, embracing time that both stood still for me and flew by so fast that I can’t believe I have to go home already. But I’ll go home changed. I came to Soaring Gardens weighed down by personal loss and self-doubt, and will leave having lightened my soul and invigorated my practice.

Meet the Residents! Max Vinetz came to Soaring Gardens from Brooklyn, New York. Here is what max has to say about his time at Soaring Gardens: "During my time at Soaring Gardens, I began and completed a 23 minute, 5 movement work commissioned by New York New Music Ensemble. Each movement of the piece was named after and inspired by a different one of Ora’s pieces. Having the time and space to fully immerse myself in solitude, the gorgeous land, and the house surrounded by Ora Lerman’s artworks were inseparable from the music I composed while in residence."
