🎧🏆🔊So happy to finally get around to sharing the wonderfully-mastered recording of the new string orchestra version of my quartet Crepitus and Cavitations, the latter of which I am very honored to announce was awarded the top prize in the 4th annual @musicon_nyc composition competition this week. This magically intimate and subtle recording of the reorchestration was captured at the @powerstationatberkleenyc by @next_fest string orchestra fellows and @peteraskim last June! Thank you to @mayflowerartcenter as well for hosting this wonderful festival and competition last week in the city, and to @jaylin.vinson @jonahcohen.music and Aaron Jay Kernis for their help in the studio with the recording process. 🎼 The 4th MusicON International Composition Competition Finals
Maya Miro Johnson — Crepitus and Cavitations
Group Age 19 and Above

Maya Miro Johnson is a composer-performer whose visceral, multidisciplinary work explores technology, illness, and the body. Her music has been presented internationally by artists and organizations including Ensemble Intercontemporain, Kronos Quartet, Minnesota Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, Lucerne Festival, Tanglewood, and Aspen Music Festival.

A recipient of the 2026 ASCAP Morton Gould Award and BMI Ellen Taaffe Zwilich Prize, Johnson studied at Curtis and Yale and is currently a PhD candidate in Music and Multimedia Composition at Brown University.

About Crepitus and Cavitations
The work takes its title from two bodily acoustic phenomena. “Crepitus” describes the grating, crackling, or popping sounds produced in joints and beneath the skin, while “cavitation” refers to sounds associated with the formation and collapse of bubbles within joint fluid.

Drawing attention to these intimate, often unnoticed sounds of the body, Crepitus and Cavitations brings the physical and acoustic into close contact—transforming cracks, friction, pressure, and collapse into musical material. by @maya.mirojohnson
