Students learned traditional dancing and celebrated at a local community Navratri celebration. One student even made Gajar ka halwa, a traditional South Asian desert, for students to share during a dancing break!⁣

Students on the AZ campus enjoyed the beauty of nature during the Wilderness Selective, where students learned basic survival skills, wilderness medicine, and emergency medical care. Students learned about altitude sickness, makeshift braces, and food poisoning. 🌲🏕️⛰️⁣

When Kathryn Xu (MED ‘27) saw gaps in healthcare access and medical education, she didn’t wait for someone else to solve them.

✨ She helped create a free dermatology clinic for people experiencing homelessness.

✨ She launched a Skin of Color lecture series to improve how future physicians diagnose and treat diverse patient populations.

✨ She became one of only five medical students nationwide to receive the Herbert W. Nickens Award.

Her story is a powerful example of what happens when compassion, curiosity, and action come together.

Student had a unique opportunity to dine with Dr. Nicole Christian-Brathwaite to learn more about her practice in trauma-informed care as a child psychiatrist. The Office of Education, Engagement, and Outreach hosted one-on-one sessions, dinner, free books, and a presentation to help medical students practice trauma-informed care when interfacing with future patients!⁣

WOAH, look at all the Palm trees! Mayo Clinic learners participated in an immersion program at the Hazelden Betty Ford Center in Palm Springs, where students expanded their perspectives on a widely stigmatized topic—addiction. Supported by generous donors, students are able to participate as patients to learn about addiction recovery and the multidisciplinary approach required to heal patients. From support group sessions, meditation, and even Qi Gong exercises, the patients at the Betty Ford Center became the teachers for our students. Learning their stories and healing process will help students destigmatize addiction with future patients and deeply understand the strength required to address the many factors leading to addiction. ⁣

The Humanities in Medicine Interest Group recently hosted Vision Board Night: My “Why,” a relaxed and creative space for MCASOM students to reflect on the people, experiences, values, and goals that inspire them to pursue medicine.⁣
⁣
Through photos, quotes, colors, collage, conversation, and a little creativity, students created personal vision boards to serve as reminders of what keeps them grounded and motivated throughout medical training!⁣ by @mayoclinicsom
