Tomorrow is the final day to see ‘to the heart of the woods’ @searspeytongallery 🌅

A huge and heartfelt thank you 💛 to everyone at the gallery for creating such a beautiful space for this show, and for everything you have done to bring my work into the world. I only wish I could come up there one more time to see the paintings all together. It was a blast being with you in September! I also want to thank @chipmem for the always fantastic photos of the work and Hope Frames in Brooklyn for the very elegant and exquisite frames. There are more people to thank on the Memphis side, but that will come in a separate post :)

This is the final week to see my show ‘to the heart of the woods’ @searspeytongallery ✨✨✨

The ten paintings in ‘to the heart of the woods’ are like an invitation, a signpost, a love letter. As references to place, they are themselves records of the unfurling life cycles of a tree, a copse, a shore. The wind, the water, the weather and time are forever shaping the edges of things, but this unfurling ribbon of natural change is pulled at the edges, pressured by the forces and appetites of human consumption. Out in the world, wild expanses divide and fragment, and in the studio I paint to remember these spaces and find a way to calm the overwhelm that comes with every news cycle. Drawn from my own photographs, I reimagine fragments of wild habitat that persist—despite human impact—within ongoing cycles of death, rebirth, and reclamation. These are spaces of tension and harmony, where the built surface and the evolving image converge. They are windows that open up to a slower register of time—one attuned to seasonal shifts, geological rhythms, and the quiet persistence of the natural world. Through line, color and beauty, a way to breathe.

A natural shoreline along the bays and creeks of the northern #GulfofMexico is a tangled thicket of brush. Charismatic bursts of palmetto, dappled light in the dense undergrowth, and then smooth soft sands along the shore. So much has been developed along waterways everywhere, and with development comes erosion, and with erosion comes fortification in the form of seawalls and bulkheads: hard borders in the intertidal zone. Where long stretches of shoreline are not impeded, the water gives as much as it takes, and the undulating line shifts, but holds. I was thinking of these rhythms of constant tides and waveforms like a heartbeat, continually shaping and caressing the place between land and sea.

In the recent issue of @bittersoutherner : My painting “Dark was the night” paired with beautifully visual writing of @shanefarafield 💙🖤💙
Get @reshare_app • @kyletibbsjones In the mood for something literary (and a little spooky?) You must read @shanefarafield’s latest at the @bittersoutherner. When Shane sent over the draft … I was shook … on so many levels. Of course I love great writing, but I also really love a true (!?!) ghost story. It’s good. Link in profile.

Oh and big love to @mayseycraddock for letting us use her gorgeous paintings.

Repost from @bittersoutherner

Over the years, Shane Mitchell ( @shanefarafield ) has written many stunningly beautiful and award-winning food stories for The Bitter Southerner.

But oh dear readers, this story is something different. “Sight Unseen” is a psychological gothic tale.

“The bridge was low to the marsh where a blackwater river kissed the ocean mouth. A simple swing affair, a few feet above the pluff mud at low tide, long as a dawhoo mile from one side to the other. The span was sectioned with iron bands so car wheels went thunka thunka thunka like a bass drum announcing my arrival.

I crossed over.”

Shane knows something about the realm beyond the veil. She knows something about violence. Yes. Spooky Season has officially arrived.

Enjoy. by @mayseycraddock

“Cloud and Locust Sun” is the largest work in my show ‘to the heart of the woods’ @searspeytongallery

In my last post about the painting “Blue Mountain” I spoke about how I revisit places over time, both through real-world visits and also by continuing to let the imagery speak through my work. This piece is referencing the same very old live oak tree, but in a more imagined form - one that has emerged through iterations of drawing and internalizing the shapes and curves of this tree. Its canopy patterns against sky, and the surrounding meadow and treelines have morphed into clouds and rivers. With such an expanse of painting surface, I worked to control my color urges and keep the palette streamlined. Painting at such a large scale is another kind of experience for an artist - you really are in such a different kind of conversation with the work. It is almost body-scale, and while I always strive to listen to where each painting wants to go, a piece this big is more like the mother tree itself, telling me everything I need to know. In the studio, it was a grounding presence and fed the energy and exploration that went into creating this body of work.

See this and other work @searspeyton in my show “to the heart of the woods”, on view until October 17.

This piece, “Blue Mountain”, is a recurring image in my work. I have known this particular tree all my life, and the draping branch comes from a photo I took while standing under its canopy. It is an old tree, a live oak whose arms undulate and cross and sometimes touch the ground. I’m drawn to the drama of its riverine forms tethering earth and sky, the Spanish moss lending a sense of gravity. All of my work is based on my own photographs, which are turned into intricate line drawings that are transferred onto the paper bags with carbon paper. So a lot of drawing, a lot of line, a lot of time to think about the image. This process is labor intensive, so I end up re-using drawings to experiment with different color palettes or scales. The image therefore goes through its own kind of evolution, the lines morphing and changing along the way, like a shoreline shaped by waves, so that each iteration becomes its own moment in time.

Maysey Craddock: “to the heart of the woods” is on view now through October 17th!

The wind, the water, the weather and time are forever shaping the edges of things, but this unfurling ribbon of natural change is fraying at the edges, pressured by the forces and appetites of human consumption. Out in the world, wild expanses divide and fragment, and in the studio Craddock paints to remember these spaces and find a way to calm the overwhelm that comes with every news cycle. She reimagines fragments of wild habitat that persist, despite human impact, within ongoing cycles of death, rebirth, and reclamation. These are spaces of tension and harmony, where the built surface and the evolving image converge. In to the heart of the woods, the title piece of the show, Craddock leads the viewer into this tension, an electric meeting point of deep fuchsia and orange, the place where sky meets land and land meets water.
