Love and Happiness 🍊🌳
Monty Alexander & Ernest Ranglin w/DJ Koco Edit 7” (Japan 2026, Solid/MPS Records)

Celebrating a bit of lovely stuff in an otherwise brutal month.
1. Finally sniped this elusive Monty & Ernest Japanese 7”. Love the original RASS! album cut, and DJ Koco gives it a killer edit on the flip side.
2. Upgraded my Ortofon SPU 1E to a Classic GE MkII. The nude elliptical diamond tracks noticeably cleaner, especially on inner grooves and 45s. Sounds next level.
3. Resuscitated a plant I’d all but given up on. I suspect the resident Kodama forest spirit helped.
4. Venturing into head-fi after a Trade Me Hail Mary paid off spectacularly and landed a pair of Audio-Technica ATH-WP900 wooden headphones. They look incredible, with the finish courtesy of Japanese guitar manufacturer Fujigen. 🤌🏼
5. My friend Josh has finally got his artisanal PEP pepper onto shelves in Wellington. Everyone makes a fuss about salts and coffee beans, but what about single-origin pepper varietals!? Give it a crack.
6. We’ve finally got some R18 ghost tours coming up at the Wellington Opera House this Halloween. (Say whatever the hell you want etc)
7. Vu and I will be throwing down Blue Note’s, Prestige and other early classics, alongside 70’s jazz-funk, hip hop foundations, and weird spiritual vinyl noodles at Regent for the Wellington Jazz Festival. Come through for a bit of 🎷 and some🍸 taken in Wellington, New Zealand by @mazdef

Cymande — The Message (POL 1979 RE / Polskie Nagrania Muza)

Polish repress of the Cymande self-titled LP, except they decided to give it a different name and their own artwork.
Not sure why Polish releases often went rogue, but this one feels particularly at home. Lovely stuff. taken in Wellington, New Zealand by @mazdef

Few home systems make their priorities as clear as the one built by @mazdef in Wellington, New Zealand.

At the centre of it all is a pair of Altec 9844 studio monitors, a design whose roots go back to the Altec 844A introduced in the mid-1960s. Conceived for recording and broadcast control rooms, the 844A was later recoded as the 9844A and represented a more compact interpretation of Altec’s professional horn-loaded philosophy.

The basic architecture is unmistakably Altec: two 12-inch low-frequency drivers combined with an 811B sectoral horn, crossing around 800 Hz. Several versions of the 9844 existed over the years, with different drivers and specifications, so these monitors are better understood as a long-running professional platform rather than one single fixed configuration.

What makes @mazdef’s system especially interesting is everything surrounding them.

Amplification comes from a Luxman MQ-70 and a McIntosh MC7270, with a McIntosh C26 handling preamplification duties. Vinyl playback is built around a Garrard 301 fitted with Ortofon SPU cartridges, including an SPU #1A and SPU A Mono, partnered with a Redboy / Altec 4722 step-up transformer setup.

There is also a Tascam 32 reel-to-reel, adding another piece of genuine studio-era hardware to a system already deeply rooted in professional audio history.

And then there is the room itself: USM furniture, records everywhere and even R2-D2, making the whole setup feel personal rather than museum-like.

A great example of how vintage studio equipment can move into a domestic environment without losing the character that made it interesting in the first place.

Another solid acquisition from Jeremy at @9mtokyo. Often slipping under the radar being the awkward sibling between his early Cooker/Candy era and Sidewinder, but it’s grown to be a fave. Soulful and bluesy with a bit of pep from McLean and the Blakey rhythm section (the hot af RVG cut helps too).
Luckily I’m not shy of a bit of white out either, but likely from the Kissaten it was originally sourced from. Always curious about those battle scars and the added character. Lovely stuff. taken in Wellington, New Zealand by @mazdef

Lured in by the insanely good cover art, and stuck around for Japanese jazz-funk fusion at its peak.
With my Ortofon SPU out of action, it sounded perfect on the freshly wired Denon 103r MC cart complete with the @jeremyyoungdesign mod, the stock SME headshell & vintage Altec 15095’s in the SUT (just holla to find out more about home audio & hifi acronyms btw).

The quiet favourite Cortex record following Troupeau Bleu and before Alain Mions solo outings.
Still rooted in solid Parisian jazz funk but leaning towards the more textural and introspective. Warm Rhodes and loose arrangements, you can almost smell the ciggies. Lovely stuff. taken in Wellington, New Zealand by @mazdef

Sonically silent noise floor with space, clarity and punch (much like the content itself). Shout out to @jeremyelkin for the big tip on this one, this masterpiece has never sounded better. Lovely stuff. taken in Wellington, New Zealand by @mazdef
