Few home systems make their priorities as clear as the one built by @mazdef in Wellington, New Zealand.

At the centre of it all is a pair of Altec 9844 studio monitors, a design whose roots go back to the Altec 844A introduced in the mid-1960s. Conceived for recording and broadcast control rooms, the 844A was later recoded as the 9844A and represented a more compact interpretation of Altec’s professional horn-loaded philosophy.

The basic architecture is unmistakably Altec: two 12-inch low-frequency drivers combined with an 811B sectoral horn, crossing around 800 Hz. Several versions of the 9844 existed over the years, with different drivers and specifications, so these monitors are better understood as a long-running professional platform rather than one single fixed configuration.

What makes @mazdef’s system especially interesting is everything surrounding them.

Amplification comes from a Luxman MQ-70 and a McIntosh MC7270, with a McIntosh C26 handling preamplification duties. Vinyl playback is built around a Garrard 301 fitted with Ortofon SPU cartridges, including an SPU #1A and SPU A Mono, partnered with a Redboy / Altec 4722 step-up transformer setup.

There is also a Tascam 32 reel-to-reel, adding another piece of genuine studio-era hardware to a system already deeply rooted in professional audio history.

And then there is the room itself: USM furniture, records everywhere and even R2-D2, making the whole setup feel personal rather than museum-like.

A great example of how vintage studio equipment can move into a domestic environment without losing the character that made it interesting in the first place.
