It’s the little details that make an OEM+ build. 👌

The aftermarket mic we wanted to use sounded better, but the housing wasn’t going to fit cleanly in the factory location.

So @audiosystemsinc did what they do best — 3D print a custom piece to mount the upgraded mic exactly where BMW intended. 🎯

Better mic. Factory location. No awkward add-ons hanging off the dash.

This is why I love working with a shop that’s willing to solve the small problems instead of settling for “good enough.”

Not the flashiest part of the build—but arguably the most important.

Before the new speakers went in, the doors received a full layer of sound-deadening treatment. The rear deck got the same attention.

It may look simple, but this material makes a huge difference. It reduces panel resonance, controls rattles and gives the speakers a more solid foundation to work from.

The result is tighter midbass, cleaner detail and less unwanted vibration—especially when the volume comes up.

Upgrading speakers and amplifiers is only part of building a great system. Taking the time to properly treat the car itself is what allows all that hardware to perform the way it should.

It’s the kind of work you’ll never see once the panels are back on…

But you hear it every time the music plays.

Modern tech without making the interior look modernized. 👌

Here’s a better look at the finished interior with the XTRONS head unit installed.

One of my biggest concerns going into this audio build was adding a large touchscreen to a 20+ year-old interior. I wanted CarPlay and modern functionality, but I didn’t want something that looked like an iPad was glued to the dashboard.

This is, plus the fact that it fiber optics are exactly why I went with the XTRONS.

The fit, proportions, physical buttons and factory-style placement blend surprisingly well with the E46 dash. Paired with the refinished HVAC relocation trim, the entire center stack looks clean and intentional.

And behind that OEM+ appearance is a pretty serious upgrade: wireless Apple CarPlay, navigation, apps, backup camera integration and optical digital audio feeding directly into the MATCH DSP.

Modern functionality when I want it. Classic E46 when I look around the cabin.

That was the goal.

Apple CarPlay… finally. 🙌

I love the analog feel of the E46 M3, but I’ll admit I’ve gotten used to modern tech.

With the XTRONS head unit, the M3 now has Apple CarPlay while still looking right at home in the E46 interior.

Navigation, Spotify, podcasts, calls, messages—everything I use daily, now in a 20+ year-old M3.

I chose this specific XTRONS for another reason: optical digital audio output.

Instead of relying on analog signal, it sends audio digitally via fiber optic straight to the MATCH DSP, where all conversion, processing, and tuning is handled.

That was key for this build. I wanted modern Android-based functionality without the head unit becoming the weak link in a sound-focused system.

Old-school M3 driving feel. Modern connectivity. Clean digital signal path.

OEM+ was the goal from the start, and this is easily one of those upgrades I’ll appreciate every time I drive the car.

Pickup day. 🔊🏁

After months of researching, planning, changing my mind a few times 😅, and obsessing over all the little details, the E46 M3 audio build is finally complete.

Today I picked her up from @audiosystems, and I’ve been looking forward to this drive home for a while.

The goal from day one was simple: OEM+. Preserve everything I love about the E46 while bringing the audio and technology experience into the modern era.

Morel Virtus components.
MATCH amplification + DSP.
Dedicated sub amplification.
Helix 10” sub.
XTRONS head unit.
EchoMaster backup camera.
Sound deadening throughout.
And a whole lot of careful installation and tuning.

No giant amp rack. No cutting up the car. No flashy install.

Just clean, hidden upgrades designed to make the M3 look factory… until you turn up the volume. 🔥

Now for the part I’ve been waiting for…

Some might say a backup camera doesn’t belong on a 2004 E46 M3.

I disagree.

One of the goals of this build has always been to preserve everything that makes the E46 special while thoughtfully integrating the creature comforts we’ve all become accustomed to in modern cars.

The EchoMaster backup camera paired with the XTRONS head unit does exactly that.

Clean installation. Factory-like integration. No awkward license plate frame or obvious aftermarket look—just a feature that works seamlessly every time you shift into reverse.

The best part? It doesn’t change the character of the car.

It simply makes living with it every day a little easier.

Twenty-two years later, this M3 is getting the technology it deserves.

The best upgrades are the ones you never notice… until you hear them.

One of my biggest goals for this E46 M3 audio build was preserving the car’s practicality and factory appearance. Instead of filling the trunk with a custom amp rack, the Match UP 8BMW DSP amplifier and Match UP 1FX were installed in the exact location of the original BMW amplifier.

Why does that matter?

• No lost trunk space
• Completely hidden installation
• Factory wiring integration
• Reversible, OEM-friendly design
• Modern DSP tuning and significantly more power than the original system

Open the trunk, and it still looks like an E46 M3.

Turn on the music, and it’s a completely different experience.

This is exactly what an OEM+ build should be—modern performance without compromising what made the car special in the first place.

One of the guiding principles for this build has been simple:

Upgrade everything. Cut nothing.

Here’s a look behind the door card at the newly installed Morel Virtus component speakers.

Rather than modifying the factory door, Audio Systems used custom 3D-printed mounting brackets that allow the speakers to bolt directly into place without cutting or permanently altering the original panel.

It’s a detail most people will never see—but it’s exactly these kinds of decisions that separate a thoughtful OEM+ build from a typical aftermarket install.

Twenty-plus years from now, the car can still be returned to stock if desired… but I have a feeling that won’t be happening anytime soon.

There’s something satisfying about seeing months of planning finally come together.

Stopped by Audio Systems to check on the progress of the E46 M3 audio build, and seeing everything mocked up in the trunk made it all feel real.

The goal was never to fill the trunk with flashy equipment—it was to create a clean, OEM+ installation that looks intentional and delivers modern sound quality without sacrificing the character of the car.

Tucked away are the brains of the system: a Match UP8BMW #amplifier and dedicated Match 1FX subwoofer amplifier, all professionally integrated and hidden from plain sight. It’s the kind of work you only notice when you know what you’re looking at.

Some parts don’t need to be flashy to completely transform a build.

This HVAC relocation trim piece showed up pretty rough, but I trusted @clwnshu with the refinishing… and he absolutely nailed it. The finish looks factory-fresh—maybe even better than factory.

I only wish I had taken a “before” video. All I’ve got is a photo from an earlier post, but seeing the finished piece in person is on another level.

This trim is getting installed as part of my OEM+ audio build, and details like this are what make a project feel complete. Huge appreciation to @clwnshu for the craftsmanship. 👏

The upgrade list keeps growing… 😅

The Bavsound speakers were a solid improvement over factory, but I couldn’t stop wondering what was possible with a true audiophile setup.

Next up: Morel Tempo Ultra components. These will be replacing the Bavsounds as part of the full OEM+ audio build on my E46 M3. Paired with DSP tuning and the rest of the system, I’m hoping this is the upgrade that makes every drive feel like a private concert.

The goal has never been the loudest system—just one that sounds so good you keep driving long after you’ve reached your destination.
