Ellis Byrd Sessions Smith
August 19, 2026
7 lbs 2 oz
19 inches

Ellis joined our little family last week. She’s a slice of heaven and completes our girl gang. Scout is slowly warming up to the idea of “baby sister.” Ellis’ first words might be “let it go” after enduring multiple performances of the song in only her first week of life! Noelle still insists she is the Queen of the house despite the new occupant.

After giving Scout 4 names with a lot of meaning I knew I had to keep things “even” so no early sibling fights over name length.

Ellis was the name of my paternal great grandfather. Byrd was the middle name of my paternal grandmother (and maiden name of mother). Sessions was the maiden name of my maternal grandmother. Her father, Lewe Sessions, started Sessions Company during the Great Depression. He spent his lifetime helping to improve his community (Enterprise, AL) making it a better place to work and live. Sessions Company still exists today, a remarkable story of resilience, ingenuity, and investment in community that I hope both of my daughters learn from. The primary businesses of Sessions Company are peanuts and peanut products which likely explains Scout’s lunch choice today of “peanut butter soup” (aka peanut butter in a bowl).

A huge thank you to my entire village for helping to keep me afloat not only this past week but for the past 3 years. I am incredibly lucky to have so many people who care so well for us.

A huge shout out to my parents for their endless support and help. Scout and Ellis are so lucky to have you as their “Nena” and “Bertie.” by @mbsthinks

The older I get the more I feel life is a bit anti-climatic. There aren’t all these “big” moments to have - like a graduation (or four). Adult life is a lot of ordinary moments that we may or may not assign particular value to. I often think of the “This is Water” graduation speech by David Foster Wallace. I’ve reread parts of this over and over throughout my adult life and this part always stands out to me - “This, I submit, is the freedom of a real education, of learning how to be well adjusted. You get to consciously decide what has meaning and what doesn’t. You get to decide what to worship…in the day to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice is we get what to worship.” I’ll say I’ve had a good year by the standard adult objective benchmarks (home ownership, etc), and I not as stellar one in subjective measurements- assigning to much meaning and self worth into external “achievements.” I achieved none of my running goals (a PR in any distance or a “sub 6 mile in my 36th year), but I did make a lot of friends on the run. I started and did not finish about 12 books I wanted to read, but did read enough to pass my boards (thank god, because I’m too old to study). I put way too much stock into what every patient and stranger or not stranger on the internet thought of me. I put too much pressure on myself to be everything professionally - doctor, therapist, life coach, financial advisor, insurance company bitch, and so on. I worried far too much that people hate me or are annoyed with me instead of focusing on the relationships I built this year that are true, kind, and unwavering. Anyways, all of this to say I don’t tend to make resolutions (what’s special about Jan 1?!) but I do enjoy reflecting, pivoting, and vowing to do better for myself and others … and ‘tis the season to do that! So here’s to a year of remembering we (ie me) get to decide what assign value to and how we let the world make us feel. Happy and merry! by @mbsthinks

Perry Lee "Scout" Smith was born 9/20/2023 at 9:37 pm, clocking in at 7 lbs 6 oz and 18.5 inches long.

She was 4 names because I love names with meaning and the extra one didn't change the monogram (obviously, vitally important!).

Perry Lee was the name of the black teenager who raised my maternal grandmother in the 1930s in Alabama. She was so loved by my grandmother and I heard about Perry Lee a lot growing up. I really liked the idea of naming my child after her as an homage to my grandmother but also to honor the person who likely had very few, if any, advantages in life living in the south in pre-integration Alabama.

Scout is, obviously, from To Kill a Mockingbird. My paternal grandparents lived next door to Alice Lee, Harper (Nell) Lee's sister. Alice didn't have a TV so Harper Lee came over to my grandparents to watch TV. (My grandfather was also the Methodist minister in town and the Lees went to his church). Anyways, I loved "Scout Smith" and I have a signed copy of To Kill a Mockingbird to give to her one day.

Thank you to everyone who helped make Scout a reality (@drkristinbendikson @drrichardpaulson @usc_fertility @nashvillefertilitycenter @ovationfertility @erinrgoodwin ) and to those who helped me keep my pregnancy “off the gram” until she was here.

And, for the record, the 17 week half marathon may be my proudest athletic accomplishment and think I should’ve gotten 2 medals for 2 finishers :) by @mbsthinks

“I came from the freezer.” 😂

Somewhere out there, an IVF kid is telling everyone at school exactly where they came from... and their parents are getting a phone call they were NOT prepared for.

Well, I guess that’s one way to share that you went through an IVF journey. 😬

And if IVF siblings ever try to pull the “I’m older than you” card... feel free to use this one: “Actually, you’re both the same age. One of you was just thawed later.”

But (in all seriousness) then you look at your child and think… that actually worked. 🤯

A ball of cells. Frozen. Thawed. And now a whole human being explaining embryo transfers to their entire kindergarten class.

This is the magic (and the chaos) of IVF... even after it works. And nobody talks about it quite like this.

Dr. Meggie Smith (@mbsthinks), REI at @nashvillefertilitycenter and single mom by choice, joins us in Episode 20 of Fertility Nurses Unfiltered for one of the most honest, funny, and real conversations we’ve ever had.

“LeBron James was raised by a single mom. So was Justin Timberlake. I think they did okay.” 😂

The stigma around single parenthood by choice is real. But so is her story.

Dr. Meggie Smith (@mbsthinks), REI at @nashvillefertilitycenter and single mom by choice, was so nervous about people’s opinions that she kept her entire pregnancy off social media... announcing it only after her daughter arrived.

Her caption? “Had a baby. Plot twist.”

The response? Overwhelmingly positive. 🥰

TOMORROW on Fertility Nurses Unfiltered Episode 20, she talks about what it’s actually like to choose this path... and why she has zero regrets.

“I’m either going to get children or a marriage, but probably not both on the traditional timeline. And one of those I actually have more control over.”

Dr. Meggie Smith (@mbsthinks) is a reproductive endocrinologist at @nashvillefertilitycenter + a single mom by choice. She froze her eggs at 31, flew them across the country, and used donor sperm to have her now almost-3-year-old daughter... with baby number two due in August.

She joins us in our next episode to talk about all things single parenthood by choice... the personal and the clinical.

We cover:
→ How she decided to have children on her own terms
→ Choosing a sperm donor: what actually matters
→ Building a childcare “bench” when there’s no co-parent
→ Insurance realities for single women pursuing fertility treatment
→ Talking to your kids about donor conception
→ The one thing she tells every patient considering this path

This is a don’t miss episode... honest, warm, funny, and zero BS (as always).

🎧 Episode 20: Choosing Yourself - The Truth About Single Parenthood by Choice drops Tuesday, July 14th. Link in bio.

If you’re considering single parenthood by choice, know someone who is, or are supporting someone navigating this journey… this episode is for you!
