From tire repair to collision work, more than 100 students from nine area high schools got a hands-on look at automotive careers at MCC.

“We want them to be able to experience automotive trades, but also areas that they might not be aware of, like powersports or collision repair,” said Scott Henry, MCC automotive outreach specialist.

For Emily Workman, director of recruiting at B Street Collision, events like this are also an opportunity to challenge misconceptions about careers in the trades.

“Students have heard that there’s not a lot of money in the trades or that it’s a dirty job and there’s no future in it. That’s all false.”

In January, three MCC students had their science experiment selected to travel to the International Space Station as part of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program in collaboration with Rhodium Scientific.

This morning, Eric Tomjack, Nikoli Vanosdall and Alvaro Gonzalez-Cruz, were at the Kennedy Space Center to witness their experiment leave the launch pad, making its way to the International Space Station for study over the next nine weeks.

Undergraduate research opportunities can be rare at community colleges, and ones that end up on the International Space Station are even rarer. Their microgravity experiment will measure neutron radiation levels near a solar maximum. Following the mission, students will analyze the neutron radiation data and share their findings.

They'll also be able to share their findings on what a behind-the-scenes experience at the Kennedy Space Center is like, and how participating and playing creatively in science can open up opportunities that are hard to imagine, taking your hard work to the new heights.

Congratulations to our Alvaro, Eric and Nikoli for representing MCC and sharing our school spirit at one NASA's primary field centers.

Thank you to our instructors and STEM team for going the distance for our students. by @mccneb

Last week faculty, staff and students got their hands dirty while planting over 250 Nebraska native plants in three garden beds at the Elkhorn Valley Campus. 🪴👩‍🌾

As the garden grows over the years, it will provide habitat for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, as well as a space to gather and learn.

The beds, designed with the help of @path.midwest (Pollinator Alliance of The Heartland), include several species of milkweed and coneflower, along with plants from Nebraska's more arid regions like soapweed yucca and leadplant from the Sandhills.

Many of the plants came from @bumbling_bee_natives. Owner Amanda Stastny visited campus on Sept. 21 to talk about the importance of native habitats in urban spaces.

Geography, English, history and exploratory studies students, as well Phi Theta Kappa, Student Wellness, and Facilities collaborated on the project.

"It's pretty cool that we're making our mark on campus, and it'll be here for a long time," said geography student Micah Coffman.

Future work will include signage created by students and a student sculpture.

Exploratory studies student Keenan Hathaway captured the campus coming together to put in a pollinator garden that can be appreciated for years to come. 📸 by @mccneb

Tour the vision that started in 2023 and is now a reality. 🧬✨

This week was a celebration of the completion of a project beginning with industry partners collaborating with and supporting MCC every step of the way—before there was even a space show them. Members of the MCC Board of Governors and college leaders, representatives from the Business Industry Leadership Team, the MCC community and José Gonzáles Lara, the first student to graduate with a biotechnology certificate from MCC, came to see and speak on what they built together.

Through collaboration and a shared commitment to workforce development, students now have access to hands-on training for careers in Nebraska's growing biotechnology industry.

This is more than a new lab. It's a new pathway to opportunity.
