We were excited to welcome MCC’s Intro to Construction class to our shop today!

Students got a behind-the-scenes look at the subcontractor side of construction and what day-to-day work in the trades looks like.

The future of construction starts with getting students through the door. We’re proud to help show them what a career in the trades can look like. Thanks for spending the afternoon with us, @mccneb 🔨

There are moments when “Thank You” just doesn’t feel big enough. Being recognized by the Empowerment Network for the work I do through Freedomtainment touched me deeper than I can explain, because this was never just about events, concerts, job fairs, or crowds.

It has always been about people. The mother praying for an opportunity to provide for her children. The person asking life for one more chance. The family trying to make tomorrow better than today. The young person who just needs someone to look at them and say, “I believe in you. ”Somewhere along this journey, I realized that my purpose was never just to put on events. My purpose was to open doors. And I didn’t find that purpose alone.

To Willie Barney, Tim Clark, Thomas Warren, Ernest White, Michael Maroney, MJ , Raquel Henderson and Vicki Quaites-Ferris, and every mentor, community leader, partner, sponsor, volunteer, friend, and person who believed in me when I was still trying to understand what my was purpose was—thank you.

What you poured into me, I promise to keep pouring into somebody else. And to North Omaha—you have my heart. You believed in me. You showed up for me. You trusted me. You reminded me that our community doesn’t need to be saved. It needs to be seen, believed in, invested in, and given the opportunities it deserves.

This recognition may have my name on it, but the recognition belongs to the Freedomtainment team Lead by Michelle "MJ" Jones and consist of Tim Anderson, Shannon Jackson, Virgil Haskin And Mrs. Karen Davis. Every late night was worth it. Every closed door was worth it. Every sacrifice was worth it. Because if one person gets a job…if one family finds stability…if one young person starts believing in their future again…then we did something that matters.

I hope that one day someone we helped will say: “Someone opened a door for me when I needed it most. ”And then they’ll turn around and open that door for somebody else. That’s the legacy I want. Not applause. Not recognition.

Changed lives. Changed families. Changed futures. North Omaha, thank you for helping me find my purpose. I love you. I appreciate you.

Omaha has a fine-dining restaurant where every cook is a student trying to impress this guy. And you can eat there.

If Omaha's restaurant scene were sitting together at one big family dinner, he would be at the head of the table, handing out bear hugs, pouring something rare and French, and giving a toast so good nobody wants it to end (and probably wouldn't). He's taught hundreds of the chefs cooking around town, and plenty of them now run kitchens of their own.

Meet Chef Brian O'Malley, dean of Metropolitan Community College (Nebraska)'s MCC Institute for the Culinary Arts.

He and his team run @sagestudentbistro , Omaha's only restaurant-as-classroom. Students learn to run a restaurant by actually running one, and it's open to the public. They're cooking for a grade, with their instructors watching over their shoulder. You get to eat the results.

Here's why we're mentioning all this ...

Brian, Emma Oblender, James Davis, and Cathy Curtis make sustainability part of how students learn to cook, the same way they learn knife skills. They don't have to. They do it because they think it matters.

Here's what that looks like in practice:
- Around 2,000 pounds of food scraps come to us every week: classroom waste, catering trim, dinner service, all of it.
- We recycle their wine bottles too.
- The Institute for the Culinary Arts building is LEED-certified.
- Students learn how Omaha's circular food system works, and every quarter we get to come talk with a group of them about it.

To Brian and team, thank you for making sure Omaha's next generation of chefs knows where their food scraps go.

To the people who know Brian or have eaten at Sage, let us know below what a gem we have with this bunch.

Great conversation today at Bio Innovations North America about growing Nebraska’s bioeconomy!

DED’s Cobus Block moderated a morning panel featuring core members of the Rural STAMINA project. This collaboration between partners in Iowa and Nebraska (such as Invest Nebraska, Southeast Community College, Iowa State University, and the University of Nebraska) has won a $15 million federal award (with potential to grow to $160 million!) to expand biomanufacturing capacity, support bio-based startups, and attract investment into the regional bioeconomy.

This afternoon, Bio Nebraska’s Rob Owen led a discussion on growing Nebraska bioscience workforce. Thanks to Evonik, Merck, and Metro Community College for taking part and for all you’re doing to connect students to great bioscience careers in Nebraska!
