In recognition of World Photography Day, AIRIE.Foundation reflects on photography as a practice of memory, inheritance, and attention through the work of Arsimmer McCoy (@mccoy_arsimmer).

McCoy’s relationship with photography began before she ever held a camera. It grew from family archives, photographs her father and uncle took, and an inherited way of observing the world. Today, she continues that connection with cameras that once belonged to her father and grandfather.

Her photographic practice took shape during her AIRIE.Foundation residency at the Atlantic Center for the Arts through Oolite Arts @oolitearts. Beginning with landscapes, it evolved into an intuitive process of preserving not only what a person or place looked like but also how it felt to be present with them. For McCoy, every photograph begins as a poem. Grain, shifting light, soft focus, and accidental blur become traces of a moment lived, not manufactured.

Explore the carousel to discover her reflections on photography, honesty, and the beauty held within imperfection.

And David…armed with only a sling, a leather pouch, and 5 smooth stones…approached Goliath…and when Goliath saw him….he scoffed…and insulted him. David took out his sling and a stone…and threw it square in the middle of Goliath’s forehead. Goliath fell to the ground. And David cut his head with his own sword.
.
I am David.
.
My Grass stains residency gave me back what I thought I had lost….liberation in movement.
.
It was so beautiful to go through this process not knowing, un-learning, remembering, and leaping.
.
To see my community surrounding me, seeing me, smiling at me, calling my name….I felt so supported. I appreciate every one you.
.
To my fellow residents….we did that and we will do it again. It was an honor to create with you and watch how each of you process. You all are brilliant craftsman.
.
Thank you @thepioneerwinter and our beloved process Doula/Mentor Gabri Christa @shaolinfilms for giving me a gift and a lifeline

Through a Summer series of workshops @fablabmiami and @ahcacmiami students worked with me and @mccoy_arsimmer to build their voices and tell their stories. From poetry to collage they creatively expressed themselves and their vision for the future of Miami. Come and see the manifestations of their creativity and ode’s to their Miami at “Porch Passages: Creole Collage” an installation and exhibition at the Marshall L. Davis Sr. African Heritage Cultural Arts Center on November 29th | 5-8pm

It’s important for young designers and artists to mold and nurture their voices. To feel heard and seen. And to know that their perspective matters when building the future of Miami, while honoring the past and present communities that make our city what it is.

"Through test and trials...we have come.
We made it, through...through the storm.
Hand in Hand we persevered.
And that is why....we're still Here!
WE MADE IT!" @huedsongs
.
Chile....I scrapped my way to this birthday. I give reverence to my friends and family for loving on me and keeping myself and my child lifted in guidance, joy, and prayer.
.
My Daddy say "God protects fools, babies, and airforce rangers"....I think I'm the first. But I'll be that. For my city, my family, my friends, for the ones who ain't here no more, for the ones who are here and still fighting, and for this soul of mine. Cause the world didn't give it and the world can't take it away.
.
Happy Birthday Jit. We made it.
.
Bless the shooter @michaelwebsterstudio
.
Also if you called me...RIP to my phone. She didn't make it 😂 Answering texts and calls (if you got an iphone) via laptop...communicate business via email. by @mccoy_arsimmer

Remembering “A spell to go garden” 🌱
.
The love that surrounded this release with @exilebooks and @mavenleadership sits on my chest in the softest way
.
Every hand that poured into this work, every body that showed up, every smile laid on me, every hug…thank you.
.
It reminded me that some things are too divinely kept to be undone. That even when the ground looks barren…gardens grow.
.
“A spell…” is a prayer of protection for yourself, for your families, your friends, your communities. It is about how what is meant for you will find you…every time.
.
It’s my love letter to every spirit that has stood beside me, steadfast and faithful in the unseen.
.
Every act of care was a blessing, every whisper of doubt…compost. Not one weapon formed has ever prospered…except youth fair elephant ears.
.
Say the spell and remember…it is already done.
.
Bless the Blessing to our city through her lens @passionward 💐 I love you and I thank you 🖤
.
Thank you and continue to rest well Dr. Pinkney. You are severely missed. by @mccoy_arsimmer
