If you’ve spent any time with me in the last ten months then I have probably told you how excited/stressed/proud/devastated/nervous/optimistic/panicked/enamored I am with this story. I could go on forever about what an honor it was work on (it has seriously been one of the most tender and love-filled periods of my entire life) but your time is much better spent with the story itself than with my navel-gazing. Forrest Welborn always maintained his innocence. After being accused of the infamous Austin yogurt shop murders, Welborn’s life was an endless series of betrayals. Only this year was he declared officially innocent. He’s since received millions of dollars in compensation and opened his own bar. But the past and decades of wrongful blame weigh heavy. For this month’s cover story, writer Mike Hall spoke with Welborn about moving forward and a happiness still out of reach.

Also in this month’s issue: a father who attempted to reconnect with his kids and landed in a Russian prison, the mostly true story behind the wackiest Texas film ever made, a field of marigolds worth pulling over for, the linemen getting up to rodeo hijinks, some of our barbecue editor’s favorite BBQ sandwiches, and a wildlife documentarian’s newest look at our state.

All of these stories (and even more) can be found in our October issue, in mailboxes, on newsstands, and available to read at the link in our bio now.
