Something that keeps Lindale, Texas native Miranda Lambert away from her home state is how much she loves her community in Tennessee, a broad cohort of friends and collaborators, including Ella Langley as well as Lainey Wilson. Lambert says there’s a real “sisterhood” in Nashville. “It gets hard out there, the highs and the lows,” she explains. “You need somebody to bounce it off of sometimes.”

More than 20 years into her career, Miranda Lambert lives a life more in line with peaceful enjoyment than the fire accelerant-and-firearm themes that used to define her music. Splitting her time between Tennessee and Texas, she is calmest at her farm, named Flying Pistols, which is about an hour from Nashville. “I run out here every time I get the chance,” she says. “I’ve come here before just to pet horses and take a nap.”

Only this year was he declared officially innocent. He’s since received millions of dollars in compensation and opened his own bar. But the past and decades of wrongful blame weigh heavy. STORY TIME FRIENDS!!! I used to work at this shop in my younger years (post a 10 year run at a craft shop) called @seedpeoplesmkt - I worked with a lot of characters there. So many different and distinct personalities not unlike other retail jobs, I am sure. But all of us, especially one specific year, really felt like family. One of the characters in that phase of my life was sweet Emily McCullar. She was from Texas, only in Sunny California for a couple of years. She was extremely intelligent, hard working, cute as can be, a bit of a ragamuffin, maybe not the best fit for interacting with people on a retail level, but 99% of the time fought through the urge to tell people exactly what she was thinking. We’ve kept in touch over the years here and there. Flash forward over 15 years and she’s back living in Texas, but came out to Nashville to write a cover story for a magazine because she is a successful writer now! And guess who she was so kind to think of and have dinner with the other day?!? ME!!! It filled me with so much joy catching up. And why am I telling you all this?! Well I noticed on Instagram that she had started doing her crafts. They looked like something we would carry at thunder moon and I asked her to bring some with her. And you guyssssssss - look at it!!! Coasters, magnet art and trinket trays - all one of a kind made by sweet Emily. Truly little pieces of art. Very very limited run. Growing up in Houston, we always had Texas Monthly in the house. We read and discussed the Bum Steer Awards, looked up restaurants in the back pages, and felt so proud when @stephenlclarkgallery ‘s restaurant, Waterloo Ice House (the original on Congress), made the recommended list. We knew someone cool!

I’ve loved TM for so long. Being included in the May issue makes my heart leap. Emily McCullar was cool as hell, funny, and such a pleasure to talk with. I’ll forever be a fan of her writing. Photographer @yopeteryang put me at ease after I asked him to make sure I wouldn’t look like Walter Matthau…..and he pulled it off! Seriously, he is a gifted artist.

I hope y’all will pick up a copy and read all the stellar writing within. And while you’re at it, go ahead and subscribe. Let’s support excellent print magazines like Texas Monthly. Having one in the house at all times is a good thing.
