🎥 Join us for a special screening of “Karuara: People of the River” 🎥

This award-winning documentary follows Mari Luz Canaquiri and the Kukama women’s federation as they work to defend the Marañón River and have it recognized as rights bearing entity. The film, which combines hand-painted animation and documentary footage, was created through a collaborative process that saw co-directors Stephanie Boyd and Miguel Aráoz Cartagena working closely with Kukama artists, journalists, and community members, including Canaquiri herself. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Stephanie Boyd, facilitated by Dr. Rodrigo Narro Pérez and Andrea Vela Alarcón.

🎥 Karuara: People of the River
🌟 A Screening and Discussion with Stephanie Boyd
📆 October 29, 2026, 7-9pm
📍Robinson Memorial Theatre (Chester New Hall 103), McMaster University

“Mari Luz Canaquiri says her river is the ‘ɨa’ – the center, life force and mother. Her river deep in Peru’s Amazon provides fish to eat, a transport route and a place to swim and relax. But it is also much more. Underneath the surface live the Karuara, which means 'people of the river' in her native tongue.” (Karuara website)

Looking to publish your work in an open-access journal?

One of the first questions many students and researchers ask is: Is my work a fit?

At Global Health: Annual Review (GHAR), we welcome original work that brings meaningful perspectives to global health.

Whether your research work began as a thesis, practicum, article, scholarly paper, narrative reflection, or art-based work, it may have a place in our next issue.

We welcome submissions from students, emerging and established researchers, academics, and practitioners working across global health disciplines.

Written submissions should be fully developed, ready for editorial review, and between 700–1,200 words, with an appropriate structure for the type of work being submitted.

Submissions are now open for our next issue.
🗓 Deadline: Friday, October 23, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST
Review our submission types and requirements:

Courageously challenge the norm + fearlessly find ways to improve 📈

Throw back to last week’s Welcome Zoom call for this year’s cohort of McMaster University’s Graduate Diploma in Global Surgery at the Mary Heersink School of Global Health and Social Medicine. By virtue of enrolling and pursuing this additional qualification, these students are embarking on precisely this path!

It is a profound privilege to journey alongside our diverse interdisciplinary cohort as they layer Academic Global Surgery onto their existing credentials and expertise. Global Surgery is not just for healthcare providers with a smattering of health finance + policy folks - we need *all* professions who bring an array of expertise and lived experiences as diverse as the problems the field needs to solve! On behalf of the Core + Guest Faculty, we are immensely proud to support this global online classroom that facilitates such cross-pollination 🐝

I look forward to a rich year of discussion, debate, and discourse on the field’s fundamentals, contemporary challenges, and innovative solutions for more equitable + accessible surgical care systems everywhere.

(Photo captured only a portion of our students + faculty because it wouldn’t be Global Surgery without folks having to tend to other duties across a number of time zones ‼️)
