🎥 Join us for a special screening of “Karuara: People of the River” 🎥 This award-winning documentary follows Mari Luz Canaquiri and the Kukama women’s federation as they work to defend the Marañón River and have it recognized as rights bearing entity. The film, which combines hand-painted animation and documentary footage, was created through a collaborative process that saw co-directors Stephanie Boyd and Miguel Aráoz Cartagena working closely with Kukama artists, journalists, and community members, including Canaquiri herself. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Stephanie Boyd, facilitated by Dr. Rodrigo Narro Pérez and Andrea Vela Alarcón. 🎥 Karuara: People of the River 🌟 A Screening and Discussion with Stephanie Boyd 📆 October 29, 2026, 7-9pm 📍Robinson Memorial Theatre (Chester New Hall 103), McMaster University “Mari Luz Canaquiri says her river is the ‘ɨa’ – the center, life force and mother. Her river deep in Peru’s Amazon provides fish to eat, a transport route and a place to swim and relax. But it is also much more. Underneath the surface live the Karuara, which means 'people of the river' in her native tongue.” (Karuara website) Click on the link in today's IG story to reserve a seat. This event is co-hosted and sponsored by the Arts & Science Program, the Department of Communication Studies & Media Arts, the Department of English & Cultural Studies, the Global Peace & Social Justice Program, the Latin American Network at McMaster University, the Mary Heersink School of Global Health & Social Medicine, the McMaster University Libraries, the School of the Arts, and the School of Earth, Environment, and Society at McMaster University.

Looking to publish your work in an open-access journal? One of the first questions many students and researchers ask is: Is my work a fit? At Global Health: Annual Review (GHAR), we welcome original work that brings meaningful perspectives to global health. Whether your research work began as a thesis, practicum, article, scholarly paper, narrative reflection, or art-based work, it may have a place in our next issue. We welcome submissions from students, emerging and established researchers, academics, and practitioners working across global health disciplines. Written submissions should be fully developed, ready for editorial review, and between 700–1,200 words, with an appropriate structure for the type of work being submitted. Submissions are now open for our next issue. 🗓 Deadline: Friday, October 23, 2026 at 11:59 PM EST Review our submission types and requirements: journals.mcmaster.ca/ghar/about/submissions Have questions?

🇯🇵 Midwife x 🇭🇰🇨🇦 Ob/Gyn It was a true delight meeting Associate Professor Kayoko Sekijima of Niigata University 🇯🇵 last week during her visit to McMaster. When you bring a midwife and an Ob/Gyn together, the conversation knows no borders. We bonded over our shared passion for: • Maternal health • Women’s Health across ages + stages • The relative stigma + silence of such issues in East Asian cultures • Women in leadership • The growing FemTech movement globally It was also a pleasure to share our journey developing the innovative Graduate Diploma in Global Surgery at the Mary Heersink School of Global Health + Social Medicine. はじめまして. よろしくお願いします. どうもありがとうございます. A day of firsts 🗓️ One week ago, on May 21, 2026, across the McMaster 🎓 stage walked: • the 1️⃣st cohort from the Graduate Diploma in Global Surgery at the Mary Heersink School of Global Health and Social Medicine (some of them - bc it wouldn’t be Global Surgery without some folks being in a different time zone!) • the 1️⃣st medical school graduates from the Black Equity Stream (BESt) from the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine …and it was my 1️⃣st time back in this space exactly 16 years to the day from when I graduated from medical school at McMaster University, although my vantage point was a bit different this time 🩺 It was triply meaningful to greet all of these Grad Diploma + medical students in my role as the Founding Program Director of the Grad Diploma in Global Surgery + Ob/Gyn Clerkship Director…all of whom I’ve taught and many of whom I’ve personally mentored. The frantic blurry backstage selfies capture the spontaneous excitement of this milestone - the lighting was suboptimal, the angles were unplanned, but the joy was palpable and genuine! It was a true delight and privilege to also meet the countless friends/partners/family members who have diligently supported + grounded these students during their respective journeys. It truly takes a village! 💬 As President Susan Tighe so eloquently quoted at convocation: “Education is not to be viewed as something like filling a vessel with water, but rather, assisting a flower to grow in its own way” 🌱 - Bertrand Russel, British philosopher Here’s to all of our graduates! May you continue to take risks, break barriers, build solutions courageously…and ultimately leave the world more equitable than how you found it 🌐 @mcmasterugme @macmedwrc @macmednrc @mcmasteru @mcmastergho @machealthsci @mcmasterglobalsurgerydip

An estimated 5 billion people worldwide still lack access to safe, timely surgical care. That global reality is what inspired McMaster University’s new Graduate Diploma in Global Surgery. Housed within the Mary Heersink School of Global Health and Social Medicine, the program brings together learners and faculty from around the world and across disciplines, with a curriculum focused on strengthening surgical care systems and improving access to affordable, high-quality care. Three graduates from the program’s inaugural cohort — Mann Parikh, Paulina Vargas Ruiz and Solana Vellani-Husein — reflect on their time in the program and how it shaped their perspectives of global surgery and equitable care. Visit our #linkinbio to learn about their plans for after graduation and how their new diploma will help get them there. #McMasterUniversity #McMasterU #MacHealthSci #Health #Research #Education Composite graphic of Mann Parikh, Paulina Vargas Ruiz and Solana Vellani-Husein.
