We’re really pleased to be working with Elliott Flanagan towards a solo presentation with Arcade at The Manchester Contemporary this November.

Elliott is developing Divine Youth, a project growing out of memory, class, place, working-class youth culture, masculinity, escape, music, travel and self-invention.

There’s a great interview with Elliott in Corridor8, reflecting on home, class and representation.

The final spotlight in this series celebrating last year's Manchester Contemporary Art Fund acquisitions is Freedom and Respect (2024) by @shezaddawoodstudio, represented by @castlefieldgall.

The engraving on this cocktail shaker is adapted by Dawood from his banner design Freedom and Respect (A Banner for Castlefield) (2023), which was gifted to Castlefield to mark the organisation's 40th anniversary.

Freedom and Respect is now on display at @manchesterartgallery as part of the Gallery's contemporary collection.

Thank you for following this series highlighting the Manchester Contemporary Art Fund acquisitions. Each work reflects the Fund's vital role in supporting artists and galleries while continuing to grow Manchester Art Gallery's collection for future generations. by @mcrcontemporary

Today's spotlight from last year's Manchester Contemporary Art Fund acquisitions is Clack Clack (2024) by @simeonbarclay, represented by @castlefieldgall.

Drawing on advertisements, magazines, television and music, Barclay combines images of culturally significant moments and figures with personal memories to explore how we define and situate ourselves within society.

Make some noise, there’s two new acquisitions causing a stir 🍸
Shezad Dawood’s ‘Castlefield - Freedom & Respect’ and Simeon Barclay’s ‘Clack Clack’ are now on display in the Craft and Design Gallery.

Simeon’s just been nominated for this year’s Turner Prize and Shezad’s latest film, ‘Episode 7: Africana, Ken Bugul & Nemo’ is on display now @castlefieldgall in the group show ‘Out Here’ until 19 July.

Matthew Pendergast, Head of programmes at Castlefield Gallery tells us more.
“It’s fantastic to see [Shezad’s and Simeon’s] work on display in the city’s art gallery. Both pieces were commissioned to celebrate Castlefield Gallery’s 40th anniversary and to raise funds in support of our activities. Castlefield Gallery’s purpose is all about nurturing the work and careers of visual artists, especially those in the North West of England.

Shezad has a long standing relationship with the gallery and commitment to artists living and working in the North of England. We are very grateful to Simeon for all his positivity, the deep understanding of our purpose and approach he has demonstrated over an extended period now, and his generosity - being one of the seven artists who donated their design to the gallery to make the anniversary editions. We wish Simeon the very best of luck for his Turner Prize nomination this year!

We are especially pleased the acquisitions are contributing to the city’s Craft and Design displays, joining a rich collection of objects. Sincere thanks to everyone who invests in The Manchester Contemporary Art Fund and makes the Manchester Art Gallery acquisitions from the fair possible.”

Represented by @_texture_.
Born and raised in Zimbabwe and now based in the UK, Errol Theunissen creates paintings rooted in personal experience and memory. With playful titles and expressive compositions, Yes I Am Certain That The Romans Did Not Lie On Their Sofa Wearing Dirty Vans And Feasting On Pasta! and Radio celebrate storytelling through painting. Together, they invite us to reflect on memory, humour and the ways our experiences shape how we see the world.

Acquired through the Manchester Contemporary Art Fund, both works are now part of @mcrartgallery ‘s permanent collection. Visitors can discover Yes I Am Certain That The Romans Did Not Lie On Their Sofa Wearing Dirty Vans And Feasting On Pasta! in Gallery 12 and Radio in Gallery 16. by @mcrcontemporary
