After a three year wait, the new Belmont Park opened today! I didn’t know quite how I would react to it. Would I be sad for old Belmont which I loved dearly? Would I embarrass myself by crying LOL? There was no crying! I loved it! Gleaming white in the sun, elegant, elevated, and oh dear, the huge paddock! Job well done to all who made it happen. Highlight of the day was Japanese superstar and current Breeder’s Club Classic winner Forever Young taking the million dollar Jockey Club Gold Cup. What a treat to see a world-class equine athlete. Well worth the three year wait! @thenyra taken in Belmont Park by @mcreyba

Attended a lecture on the building of the World Trade Center at the Skyscraper Museum in lower Manhattan a few weeks ago. Today, a touching tribute at Bryant Park. A chair representing every life lost 25 years ago on September 11 along with beautiful music. Seems like that terrible day was a century ago. Also seems like it was yesterday. 🇺🇸 @skyscrapermuseum by @mcreyba

The most beautiful months in NYC are September and October IMO. No better place to view the city in the early fall sunshine than at Edge NYC. @edgenyc @hudsonyards taken in The Edge, New York by @mcreyba

Earlier this year, an A-list movie actor made a very controversial statement. He said no one cares about the ballet or opera anymore. That won’t do. In response, I attended three performances at the Metropolitan Opera in a two month period! The new season begins September 22. There are great seats within almost any budget and you don’t have to wear black tie! Also, beginning tonight through September 7, the annual screenings of last season’s highlights will be shown outdoors at Lincoln Center. It is fun and free! So please turn off the streaming services and support the high arts! @metopera taken in The Metropolitan Opera by @mcreyba

Every family has their legendary stories they love recounting. My family is no different. We were present at the birth of Dolly Parton’s country music career. Really. The Russell County Fair and Horse Show was an annual highlight in our lives. Rides, horse shows, livestock competitions and big name country music performers. In 1967, the Grand Ole Opry star Porter Wagoner was scheduled to perform at the fair. Wagoner was a very popular singer at the time with a nationally syndicated television show. He had a featured “girl singer” on his show named Miss Norma Jean who was also scheduled to appear at the fair. But when Wagoner introduced his girl singer, instead of Miss Norma Jean it was Dolly Parton. Who? My sister said the crowd groaned with disappointment. It seems Norma Jean had decided to focus on her personal life and leave her singing career only a few days prior and had been replaced by the unknown Dolly Parton. Dolly’s association with Wagoner introduced her to a national audience and began her trajectory to superstardom. My sister assures me I was present for this moment of music history but as I was a toddler, sadly, I have no memory of it. Much to my surprise a Facebook post yesterday told this story of Dolly’s first professional performance with Porter Wagoner and included the newspaper advertisement for the fair. There are the pictures of Porter Wagoner and Miss Norma Jean. It felt like an archeological find to me! Here was proof of that performance at the fair that was part of my family’s history as well. RIP dear Dolly 🦋 by @mcreyba
