At noon on Wednesday, October 14, James Andrew Whitaker, assistant professor of anthropology at the University of Southern Mississippi, will present "Mississippi in Liberia" for #HistoryIsLunch at the @museumofmshistory and @mscivilrightsmuseum. During the 1830s and 1840s, the Mississippi State Colonization Society created a colony called “Mississippi in Africa” in what is now Sinoe County, which involved almost 600 African Americans from Mississippi. Whitaker’s book "Met by the Love of Liberty: History and Identity in Americo-Liberian Memory" focuses on the history and aftermath of this Mississippi settlement through interviews with members of descendant communities. This free event will also stream live on the MDAH Facebook page and YouTube channel. Copies of the book will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow. by @mdah_official

Start your Halloween weekend with a special outdoor screening of Sinners (2025) in the Welty Garden on Friday, October 30, 2026!

Award‑winning director Ryan Coogler and cinematographer @addp drew visual inspiration from Eudora Welty’s photographs of Mississippi during the Great Depression, and we’re grateful to the @msfilmsociety for helping us bring this film to the Welty House.

Grounds open at 6:00 p.m. and the screening begins at 6:30 p.m. We’ll be using wireless silent‑disco headphones to deliver excellent sound while keeping the garden atmosphere relaxed and community‑friendly. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs or blankets for a movie picnic. Enjoy free popcorn and lemonade, and purchase a themed cocktail if you're 21+.

This event is free, but due to the film’s rating, registration is required. Email info@eudoraweltyhouse.com or use the sign-up link in our bio to register.

We hope you’ll join us for an evening of blues, and a bloody good time! by @mdah_official

This set of musical bells was made for and used by Dr. James Pyrrhus Turner Stephens, who was born #OTD in 1876. A graduate of Millsaps College and Tulane University School of Medicine, Dr. Stephens began a practice in Attala County around 1900. Dr. Stephens was a leader in the county medical field and a fan of novelty musical instruments, including these percussion bells.
