Today, we had the privilege of attending the official project announcement for the new Vicksburg Civil War Visitor Center.

Thrash Commercial Contractors will serve as the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR). We look forward to working alongside the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, the National Park Service, and Friends of Vicksburg National Military Park to bring this vision to life! Special thanks to our design partner: @perkinswill

This facility will serve as a place to preserve history, educate future generations, and welcome visitors from across the country to one of our nation’s most significant historic sites. We're proud to play a part in building something that will serve Mississippi for generations to come!

The Jackson Mets were a Class AA minor league affiliate of the New York Mets that played in Jackson from 1975-1990. This signed program and baseball are from Mets game played at Smith-Wills Stadium in the late 1970s and were donated by @mdah_official historian Jeff Giambrone. Learn more about the sports teams that came out of the state at our temporary "Mississippi Made" exhibit before it closes on November 6! ⚾

51 days until Capital City Lights

There’s something special about seeing Smith Park dressed for the holidays. And come Saturday, December 5th, this historic little corner of downtown Jackson will be ready to celebrate!

Think carriage rides, live entertainment, photos with Santa, and plenty of Christmas cheer beneath the trees.

We’ve got a wonderful evening in store for you, Jackson, and this is just the beginning.

Stay tuned. There’s plenty more to share as we count down to Capital City Lights! 🎄

Start your Halloween weekend with a special outdoor screening of Sinners (2025) in the Welty Garden on Friday, October 30, 2026!

Award‑winning director Ryan Coogler and cinematographer @addp drew visual inspiration from Eudora Welty’s photographs of Mississippi during the Great Depression, and we’re grateful to the @msfilmsociety for helping us bring this film to the Welty House.

Grounds open at 6:00 p.m. and the screening begins at 6:30 p.m. We’ll be using wireless silent‑disco headphones to deliver excellent sound while keeping the garden atmosphere relaxed and community‑friendly. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs or blankets for a movie picnic. Enjoy free popcorn and lemonade, and purchase a themed cocktail if you're 21+.

This event is free, but due to the film’s rating, registration is required. Email info@eudoraweltyhouse.com or use the sign-up link in our bio to register.

We hope you’ll join us for an evening of blues, and a bloody good time!

Small town. National award. Again. 🏛️
Congratulations to the City of Drew on a $750,000 National Park Service African American Civil Rights Grant to continue rehabilitating the 1929 Drew Rosenwald School!
It’s Drew’s third AACR award in three years, after the Rosenwald School in 2024 and the Drew Jail in 2025. Each one was won in national competition alongside major universities and institutions.
Rosenwald Schools were built across the rural South through a partnership: Black communities gave their own money, land and labor, matched by the Rosenwald Fund and supported by local school districts, so their children could learn. This one is getting its next chapter.
Proud to celebrate Drew today. 👏

Two landmarks. Two HBCU legacies. A renewed commitment. 🏛️📚
Congratulations to Rust College @rcbearcats1866 on two National Park Service HBCU Preservation Grants to continue preserving the 1923 Carnegie Auditorium and the 1969 Leontyne Price Library!
For both buildings, it’s the second NPS award. Carnegie, built for Mississippi Industrial College, carries the legacy of two HBCUs, and this grant supports the next phase of stabilizing it.
Under President Dr. Johnny Moore, Rust is committed to moving the College forward. Proud to celebrate Rust College today. 👏

Happy birthday Rep. Robert G. Clark Jr.! A native of Ebenezer, Mississippi, and the first African American elected to the Mississippi Legislature since Reconstruction, Clark was a supporter of the creation of the Two Mississippi Museums and served on the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum Advisory Commission. Thanks to MDAH for having us at the Fall Teachers Workshop! We enjoyed meeting educators from across the state and connecting with other exhibitors.

We're grateful for everyone who attended our panel, picked up a postcard, or signed up for our newsletter! Two people sit behind a table with a black tablecloth near a brick wall. The table is filled with books, papers, postcards, and similar materials. A vertical banner behind the table advertises the Margaret Walker Center.
