Madeleine Miller is one of fourteen amazing artists with connections to the fashion industry currently exhibiting in ‘Temporary Fashion’ @w_a_h_pz @mdline____ originally from Cornwall is now based in North West London. A serious talent and definitely #onetowatch she is currently studying Fashion Design at the University of Westminster, supported by the @britishfashioncouncil Madeleine has several pieces in the exhibition. The show stopper being ‘Hanging Object’. Suspended mid air in the gallery’s large window, a ghostly presence, moving gently in a breeze. Somehow though, more alive than dead. A living garment - part silk satin, cotton twine and recycled junk. Either way, it’s a thing of beauty. At certain angles the piece is vintage couture, at others it’s an alien creature with protective exoskeleton. Long fabric tails dangle down, or are they tentacles? Stitched and stuffed and twisted with twine. The temptation is to touch but do so at your own risk! At its simplest ‘Hanging Object’ is an exquisite sculptural textile piece. So tactile, it’s clearly made with lots of love and toil. Madeleine says “I tried to capture the surfaces and sensations I remember from childhood from a purely tactile perspective. Sensory experiences that predate clear pictorial memories. Resulting in the three research objects… (Referring to the smaller, bundles of off cuts, stitched and presented like precious offerings made out of sheep’s wool, cotton twine and recycled junk) Where I wanted to apply this idea in a way that would encourage the audience to experience it in ways beyond just the visual.
