Happy Halloween from the Art Deco District! 👻

The Colony Hotel was designed by Henry Hohauser in 1935. It’s an excellent example of Art Deco with eyebrows above the windows wrapping around the building, a symmetrical facade, inverted T marquee and geometric lines 📐 by @mdpl1976

The Delano Miami Beach opened its doors in 1947 bearing a name honoring President Franklin Delano Roosevelt 🇺🇸

This post-war Art Deco building was the work of Romanian architect Robert Swartburg, who embraced an architectural style that was considered past its peak. Features to look out for include a symmetrical facade, ziggurat roofline interrupted by a distinct crown with fins, and a strong, central vertical line.

The Delano was one of many contributing properties when the Miami Beach Architectural District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Earlier this year, the hotel reopened after a 6-year, $100 million renovation that involved restoring original Art Deco elements like the exterior and the terrazzo flooring. by @mdpl1976

Allllrighty then 🕵️ The Tides was featured in the opening scene of the 1994 film ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’ starring Jim Carrey.

A little history on this Art Deco building: It was built with a nautical vibe in 1936 by one of our most prolific architects, L. Murray Dixon. At the time it was constructed, this was the tallest building in Miami Beach. It would later earn the nickname “The Diva of Ocean Drive” due to its towering presence.

The Tides remains closed since Hurricane Irma in 2017, but there are whispers about its reopening 👀 by @mdpl1976

Remembering the Patrician Hotel and Coral Reef Hotel, both historic buildings demolished in the past year under the Resiliency and Safe Structures Act to make way for luxury condos 🥀

The Patrician Hotel at 3621 Collins Ave was built in 1937 in the Art Deco style by renowned architect Roy F. France. It boasts geometric patterns, bold lines, and a distinct facade that captures the essence of the era.

The Coral Reef Hotel at 3611 Collins Ave was built in 1941 in a neoclassical revival style with grand columns, ornate detailing and a symmetrical facade. It was the vision of architect Joseph J. DeBrita. by @mdpl1976

Today marks 38 years since demolition started on the Senator Hotel at 1201 Collins Avenue.

Miami Design Preservation League founder Barbara Baer Capitman fought tirelessly to protect the L. Murray Dixon-designed hotel back in 1988. On the days leading up to the demolition, protesters chained themselves to the building’s door, and Capitman was photographed being escorted off the property by a Miami Beach officer after initially refusing to leave.

MDPL and other local preservationists spent the previous year organizing meetings and protests as part of the “Save The Senator” campaign. Their efforts stalled demolition by more than a year.

Density without the height 🏙️

The Miami Beach Art Deco District in the foreground is a sea of low-to-mid-rise buildings, all at human scale. When the district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979, over 800 buildings were credited as contributing structures.

You can find many great examples of Art Deco just across the bay in the City of Miami. One standout is the historic Sears Tower on the Adrienne Arsht Center grounds.

Opened on Nov. 14, 1929 as the Sears, Roebuck and Company department store, this was one of the earliest examples of art deco in the area even predating much of the art deco we know and love in Miami Beach. Its design was by Chicago firm Nimmons, Carr & Wright.

In its heyday, this store was an extremely popular place to shop for those who wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of Flagler Street just south of here. It was reported that 6,000 people from all parts of South Florida attended the grand opening.

The store closed in 1983, and the property was donated to Miami-Dade County in 1991. Dade Heritage Trust (@dhtmiami) successfully led the movement to save part of the building, including the iconic tower. The wings were demolished in 2001 to make way for the new performing arts center.

It has historic designation from the City of Miami (1991) and is on the National Register of Historic Places (1997).
