Getting my reps in at @lakesidesurfchelan on my new @libtechsurf 4’10” PoolJet. The smallest board I’ve ever surfed and it was amazing set up as a twin fin with the magic nub fin!

For anyone who surfs in the Northwest, this a a must do annual trip. 30 waves over two sessions all 30-60 second waves. So many big hacks and ground my legs to a pulp like they feel after a big ski day!!

Soaking up the last day of summer with my favourite ladies on a visit to Sidney (BC). The geography nerd in me loves the changing of the seasons as we approach the Autumnal Equinox.

On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world, about twelve hours of each. This is because the sun is positioned above the equator.

At the moment of the Autumnal Equinox the Sun crosses the equator from north to south.

After the Autumnal Equinox, the days become shorter and the air cooler with the Sun rising directly in the East, and setting directly in the West.

Formed in 1978 the Royal Canadian Airforce’s Snowbird Squadron has been entertaining Canadians coast to coast. Victoria was the lucky host tonight with perfect dead air and hot night for 30,000 people to line the beach. The smoke in the air from all the northwest wildfires was a bit ominous and tough to spot them when they went too far offshore. Super entertaining and great to see them for their farewell tour as these planes are being decommissioned after this summers tour. taken in Clover Point by @mdtsports

Seymour Narrows 1958 was the site on one of the world’s biggest non-nuclear explosions. Don to clear the channel for large vessel navigation. As a kid my dad would take me fishing here in the summer chasing the elusive Tyee’s in the roaring tides that rip through the channel with huge whirlpools ripping off the back-eddies. We hiked out there today and saw all the boats making the run at slack tide. The old photo I am showing was taken by a Columbian Newspaper photographer, Basil King. When I’d visit my dad at work, I loved to hang in the photographers office and that photo was blown up 6 feet wide on the wall and haas been etched in my memory. And they wrote a rock song about the whole thing too!?!? taken in Ripple Rock Hiking Trail by @mdtsports

The Taylor House, 909 Jackson Crescent c. 1962

I was a very lucky kid who got to grow up in a classic west coast Mid Century Modern custom built home my Mom & Dad (Pat & Rrikk) and designed by the legendary G Douglas Wylie. Dad spent time in Japan with the US Army during the Korean War and that aesthetic was a key part of the fusion with Doug’s architecture (including shoji screens between rooms in the original build).

We got the honour of visiting the house again this week and the new owner, Jamie Goehring has done a meticulous restoration job —Every detail down to restoring the old doorbell and any updates are all based on the original design aesthetics and intent. They are the perfect custodians of this MCM classic. Check it out on in the anchor photo of the Vancouver Mid Century Modern Facebook site.

The flood of flashbacks was overwhelming and so glad my Mom was able to get back for another visit as she has now moved to be near us in Victoria this week. The last photo is of us on her UBC condo deck before we headed to the ferry and her new island lifestyle.

We had a unique life experience this week - sitting in the 9th District Federal Courthouse in Portland. The oldest courthouse west of the Mississippi and opened in 1875. The gravitas of the proceeding was unique in today’s politically charged climate. Everyone of the court staff was so proud of the building and history; from the guy who wanded us at security who took the time to walk us through the halls and tell stories, to the court clerk who took 10 minutes of her introduction to the proceedings to give all the lawyers and public gallery a full historical story. We felt like extras at a movie set watching the proceedings.

Oh ya you’re probably wondering WTH are you doing there? Well it was oral arguments in a case called Panabaker et al v. Hood River that we are part of based on the city of Hood River removing our rights to do Short Term Rentals that we have legally been doing for 30+ years. AirBnB assigned a top DC lawyer to sit first chair with our local lawyers and lead oral arguments with a three person panel of federal judges. Ruling will take 3-9 months we are told.

Friends and Neighbors!

This time of year brings out the best in patriotism in both Canada 🇨🇦 and USA 🇺🇸. We love all our friends and neighbo(u)rs in Hood River and fortunately never have to deal with the horrible toxic rhetoric that dominates the internet. Looking forward to the day when our two countries get back to that same level of normal neighborly behaviour. I’ll keep that dream alive as we all celebrate July 1st / 4th with our cross boarder friends. 🎆🎇🎉

Celebrating @sazza_pat ‘s 50th and Summer Solstice with @markisphat and a fun crew all costumed in the “sports through the ages” theme. @_paulablanchet b and me decided to go as our two favourite characters from the best sports mockumentery ever - Tour de Pharmacy!
