I’m in winco and the checker doesn’t know that my best friend just died. The days continue on, the sun sets and rises, and you are gone. You are actually gone. I must put one foot in front of the other, and stop to retie my shoes, and find matches to my socks.

I check the mail, take my meds, and respond “Y” to confirm my psychiatry appointment and I don’t get to tell you about the mundanity of it all.

Milo is begging and you aren’t around to scold him, and I don’t have the heart to be stern enough under these circumstances. I corrected someone when they said he was 10 because I know he’s actually turning 12 and I really hope someone remembers his real birthday. I knew how much food he eats, and when, and I knew where you kept the towel you used to wipe his feet.

I forgot to brush my teeth that first morning, but thankfully my spare tooth brush was still in your bathroom cabinet, where it always was, just like any other day. I got vases from your prep space, filled them with water, cut the stems at 45 degrees and put in a dash of bleach just like you taught me. And I knew where all of the supplies were.

I feel this urge to stop every pair of friends walking by me in the store, and those young girls I saw in the bathroom and tell them to hug each other and not to take each other for granted and share a new secret and gossip some more. You always said that gossip was an evolutionary instinct and that it saves lives, and oh my god how I wish I could have heard all about your week.

I’ll keep going, Zach will keep drawing, and I promise I’ll finally apply to grad school. Jeremy will do all of the things that Jeremy does, and Robby will keep working at the farm. Somehow we will keep going, and you will be there as the voice in my head through it all. I miss you. I mourn you. I love you. You will always be my person. by @meaghanpdx
