Today is my one year anniversary with Meaghan and becoming a step dad. Today is also my 28th time around the sun. The past year has been the best year of my life (so far) and I owe so much to my friends and family who have made Portland my home. When I first moved here I figured Portland would just be a stop as I wandered around the country, but once I got here I just couldn’t pull myself away from this place. There is never a dull moment and there are so many people who care so deeply about creating a more just world for all of us. I have never felt more settled in a place than with Meaghan and Zach and with my community in Portland.

Meaghan and I chose to spend our anniversary and my birthday weekend rockhounding in Central Oregon. Driving around rural Oregon you see that the passion for Trump and his policies runs deep. The state East of the Cascades Mountain Range culturally resembles Appalachia and takes me back to my time spent in Southwest Virginia. Many people in both rural Virginia and rural Oregon are poor, working class people. Their needs have been ignored for decades and in many areas they have been treated as expendable by fossil fuel companies and the federal government. Rural communities deserve access to healthcare, alternative transportation options, and updated infrastructure. People in urban and rural communities are both drowning right now. Skyrocketing prices, stagnant wages, and worsening extreme weather events are killing the average American.

Trump tapped into a feeling in this nation that a Democratic Party pivot to the center can never beat. We need policies and candidates that are ready to change people’s material circumstances immediately. When Trump blames immigrants for why working class people’s lives are difficult, it distracts us from who is actually destroying our communities. We are in a Class War against billionaires. We have to be willing to call out what we are experiencing right now for what it really is and fight back. Now is not the time for despair.

We must buck up, dig in, and fight for someone we don’t know.

One of my favorite parts of our new charter is there will be TWELVE City Councillors instead of the four commissioners we currently have. Our new form of government split the city into four districts and THREE candidates will be elected from each district. We also will have ranked choice voting where you can rank SIX candidates.

This has opened the flood gates for collaboration amongst candidates both within our districts and across the city. It’s been so awesome to meet the other people in this race and no matter what happens this November 5th, Portland is going to come out of this election with over 100 awesome community organizers. I’m so inspired by the other progressives in this race and I can’t wait to get to know everyone better.

See y’all on the campaign trail.

Another Packed Week of Campaigning Behind Me:

Started the week off with a @portlanddsa Housing Working Group meeting to discuss our recent and future Renters Canvasses. At these canvasses we go out in the community and knock on doors to better understand the concerns of Portland renters and how we can better serve them. It was great to see @persistwithpark on the meeting and hear about some of their expertise and insights on housing. Jennifer is another great candidate running District 2.

@divestoregon put on an incredible Oregon Treasurer’s forum. I got to meet State Senator Elizabeth Steiner, who is an advocate for fossil fuel divestment and has a track record of standing up for working families. Senator Steiner is running for Oregon Treasurer and their primary is May 21, 2024.

The Gray Panthers put on another candidate forum where I got to speak with @bob4portland about community budgeting. Bob and I have different opinions on Community Budgeting for All, but it’s crucial to remember that disagreement is not disrespect. We need to engage in productive dialogue and not let political discourse collapse. After this forum I got name dropped by one of the Gray Panther leaders, Lew Church, on KBOO Radio as he recanted what occurred at the forum. I will upload this clip to my YouTube channel.

I got to talk with @sarahsilkie and @andraforpdx about issues ranging from environmental protections to public safety. I will add the video of our conversation to my YouTube channel as well.

I attended a @sunrisepdx planning meeting for our upcoming earth day teach in. I will make another post with more details about this.

To finish out the week I canvassed and attended the @repfarrahchaichi campaign party. Representative Chaichi had a great turnout and raised over $13,000. Farrah is a champion of the working class and we need to send them back to Salem. Farrah has a primary challenger so please vote in the May 21, 2024 election. The link to register to vote is in my bio.

This entire process is simultaneously exhilarating and exhausting. I am giving this race everything I’ve got and it’s so worth it.
