Ilê Aiyê! The first time I marched with them in 2018, I didn’t fully grasp the depth of what I showed up for. But now I know: Ilê Aiyê is a bold statement of Black beauty, ancestry, and resistance.

This is 100. This is my favorite country girl. This is our matriarch. Over the years, I’ve drawn so much inspiration from my Grandmother. I’ve spent so much time talking to her, observing her, interviewing her and still, I know I’ve only tipped the iceberg in uncovering what 100 years on earth teaches you. We love you. We are grateful for all of your spiciness, for nourishing us through the years and most of all for the vision you had for your daughters. It was unpopular at the time living in a small coal mining town in Appalachia but I know we are making you so proud. Without you, there is no us 😭❤️🖤💚. Happy Birthday Grandma 👵🏽 by @meajab

Ms. Syble is the beautiful soul that hosted us at her home in Port Antonio, Jamaica. At 80+ years young, she’s active and thriving - growing everything to sustain her plant-based diet. It was not uncommon to wake up to beautiful platters of callaloo, papaya, plantain, peppers and bush tea - all harvested from her garden. Most importantly, this was our way of practicing the principle of Ujamaa (cooperative economics). Circulating our money within the African diaspora and into the pockets of a local was a small but conscious decision that hopefully contributes towards diasporic people building our own businesses and controlling the economics of our communities.

I made a very special board for my Grandma Emma’s 99th birthday. I decorated the platter with the official state flower of Kentucky, the Goldenrod, because she was born and lived almost all of her life in a small Kentucky coal mining town. The Goldenrod flower is a symbol of strength and resilience and a reminder that beauty can be found even in harsh conditions. by @meajab
