We’re excited to introduce Signal for Help, a new podcast we made with @canadianwomensfoundation 🎧

We made this show because gender-based violence is hard to talk about. Too many survivors who come forward are met with shame and stigma. And it’s tough to know what to do when friends or loved ones are facing abuse.

In Signal for Help you’ll hear survivors tell their stories, and get practical advice on how you can support survivors in your life. Our very own @nanaabaduncan hosts and handles these conversations with such care.

The first two episodes are available now. Follow the show at the link in our bio for new episodes weekly!

These episodes aren’t easy to hear, but they’re vital. Please take care while listening.

This podcast was made with the team at @canadianwomensfoundation by @garviab @hannsung @elenahasacamera with post-production by @moreaudio_sound

Always a good night when we get together @mediagirlfriends and @thesamaracentre 🌟🌟🌟

We were proud to celebrate Humans of the House, nominated for @rtdnacanada best podcast award alongside CBC Ottawa and CBC/BBC. Congrats to The Banned Teacher for winning and to everyone nominated.

The business of journalism is changing (we’re evidence of that!) but what makes it so crucial to our democracy remains the same. Please don’t take it for granted. Pay for a subscription, gift them to your friends and family, share podcasts that teach you things.

We published a bonus episode of HOTH last month (check it out on YouTube on the Samara Centre’s channel) — it remains evergreen and a great teaching tool. Send it to the teachers in your life.

Thanks to everyone who worked on this series! ✨ Such a wonderful team:

Watch our video on how the inaugural Mary Ann Shadd Cary Fellowship for Black Journalists came together–and why it matters.

This initiative was a historic first. We built it thinking of an often-overlooked part of our industry: mid-career journalists. While we are glad to see the strong support, mentorship and fanfare offered to ‘young’, ‘new’ voices starting out in our industry, we wonder: how are they doing ten years in?

The stakes are high.

In newsrooms, the higher you go, the fewer Black journalists you find in leadership. Keeping mid-career journalists with solid experience and some seniority in the mix is key to changing that. That’s why seven of our ten fellows are mid-career journalists. It’s a crucial part of the pipeline to stronger journalism leadership.

Our industry is better off the longer we stay in it.
