Balarama Holness’ personal path to politics is unique. From growing up in an ashram, to a career as a professional football player, to running for mayor and founding a provincial political party. He became political, not necessarily to win, but to use the system to force change.

🎤In this episode of Black on the Ballot, Balarama speaks with host @nanaabaduncan about running for office and his conviction that, in politics, winning isn’t everything.

How do you build the courage to make change? What role does vulnerability play in politics? How do you stay true to yourself while pushing for change?

Who was Mary Ann Shadd Cary?

Since 1851, obituaries in The @nytimes have been dominated by white men. With Overlooked, we’re adding the stories of remarkable people.

By @meganspecia
June 6, 2018
“We should do more and talk less.”

That was the message that Mary Ann Shadd Cary, 25, wrote in a long 1848 letter to the abolitionist and African-American statesman Frederick Douglass, who had asked readers of his North Star newspaper for suggestions on improving life for black people in America.

Shadd Cary, a woman eager for change, demanded action, not rhetoric.

“We have been holding conventions for years — we have been assembling together and whining over our difficulties and afflictions, passing resolutions on resolutions to any extent,” she wrote. “But it does really seem that we have made but little progress considering our resolves.”

Douglass printed the letter, an unapologetic critique of the established male-dominated abolitionist movement and its propensity for long-winded discourse, and it became Shadd Cary’s first published work. While it put her at odds with some in the older generation, it also established her as a youthful, unconventional voice, and was the first step in her journey to becoming a prominent journalist and activist.
....
Mary Ann Shadd Cary left a remarkable legacy in Canada’s history. Yet many people have never heard of her.

Black communities have kept her story alive, but it’s only in the last decades that her life’s work has been recognized.

Shadd Cary is the first Black woman publisher in Canada. She was also an abolitionist, journalist, lawyer and educator who helped lay the groundwork for racial integration & women’s equality in Canada.

In October 2023, the City’s Toronto @tohistorymuseums marked the 200th anniversary of Mary Ann Shad Cary’s birth, by hosting a series of panel discussions and poetry recitations celebrating her life, work and influences, & connecting her inspiring legacy with Shadd Cary family descendants, academics, journalists & the Honourable Dr. Jean Augustine.
