Abu Zeyn's Egyptian Spiritual Jazz performance was so incredible to witness. @adam.elabd had the audience in a trance as he used his voice, multiple instruments, looping, and story telling to transport us to a higher place. Our packed house helped to fund support for Palestine and Sudan.

Look out for the video recording of this event.

The Battle of Seattle brought 40,000+ people to the streets of Seattle in 1999 to protest the WTO Conference and the WTO’s impact on human rights, labor, and the future effects of continued globalization. The IndyMedia movement grew out of this which eventually led to the founding of our organization, The Sanctuary for Independent Media. This event is also seen by many as setting the tone for mass mobilization movements at the start of the century, and it definitely demonstrated the power of the people!

Join us on Friday 10/16 for a screening of WTO/99, an immersive archival documentary that depicts the four-day clashes in Seattle. Filmmaker Alex Megaro @prophetkotto produced/edited the film, and he will give a Q&A after the 7pm screening. Ahead of the @wto99doc screening at 5pm, Magaro will give a Be The Media! workshop on documentary film making with pre-existing media.

Learn more and register at www.MediaSanctuary.org by @mediasanctuary

🪵🌱Christian Grigoraskos (@sunofodd ) was here last week to teach us about mulch and composting for Mulchamania! The hands-on workshop was informative with participants learning how to turn a compost pile and various techniques used for mulching including the volcano for trees. We saw some “friends” that help breakdown and contribute to the garden in their own special way. 🐍🐛 At the end, everyone had a chance to get some living soil for their own gardens. by @mediasanctuary

THE TIME FOR DENIAL IS OVER.

A new exhibition by artist Nicole Chochrek with participation from the community opens on October 23rd 6P-9P ♻️

Nicole has been collecting plastic from the environment and creatively exhibiting that collection since 2022. This installation will bring together 10,000–30,000 pieces of plastic collected through the micro-plastic recycling bins.

Here’s the part we really love: over 100 community members have contributed to this installation. What started as collected waste has become a collaborative artwork, bringing together people, materials, and stories from our community.

Come find your contribution and contribute more. Come see just how much plastic is around us. Come be part of the conversation.

📅 October 23 - November 21
🥂 Opening Reception: Friday, October 23, 6 - 9PM
♻️ Add to the Mural: Friday, October 30, 6-8:30PM

Presented in partnership with NATURE Lab, The Sanctuary for Independent Media, RPI, and Broken Plastics. taken in Context Collective Troy by @mediasanctuary

We are thrilled to welcome Abu Zeyn أبو زين for his first show at The Sanctuary. A child of the Nile River and the Arabian Desert, his ears were raised on the sounds of braying donkeys, the call to prayer and tuktuk soundsystems.

In this performance of Egyptian Spiritual Jazz, he will be sharing original hymns inspired by both Sufi and Ancient Egyptian spiritual modalities.

A portion of proceeds from this event will benefit Palestine and Sudan.
