Up until 1962, drugs only had to prove they were safe. Not that they actually work.

Some of the meds that slipped through before the rules changed are still sitting in your medicine cabinet. One is a stool softener doctors still recommend. One is in many cold and flu boxes in the aisle. One you might have taken last winter.

You'd hear about a lettuce recall by dinner. A drug recall? That usually ends up buried in an FDA enforcement report, where the people taking the medication are the last to see it.

Case in point: your GLP-1 pen exists, but the medication inside it might not. Some generic exenatide pens were just recalled because they may be empty. It's one of three recalls we're covering right now, along with an antifungal cream that failed stability testing and more than 400,000 antipsychotic tablets.

Compounded drugs are having a moment. Most people never think about where theirs actually come from.

The FDA recently inspected a plant in India that makes active ingredients for erectile dysfunction pills and more than a dozen other drugs, all sold to U.S. compounding pharmacies. Then it did something it almost never does: it published the photos.

The drug longevity enthusiasts take in hopes of slowing down aging is now being prescribed off-label to help women get pregnant.

Sarah tried for four years. She’s pregnant now, at 40, and she calls her baby “my rapamycin baby.”

Bryan Johnson takes it. Peter Attia has said he does too. And so does the California fertility specialist who has now prescribed it to more than 600 people.

Here’s the part that makes doctors nervous. It’s not FDA-approved for fertility. It can cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. And the researchers behind the study everyone keeps citing wouldn’t prescribe it themselves.
